I did a post on top searched health conditions that you don't talk about a little while ago and depression was the No. 1 searched condition. Depression is no joke. According to Mental Health America, approximately 15 percent of people hospitalized for depression eventually take their own lives. They also state that depression is a common condition in the U.S. More than 19 million Americans have clinical depression. More interestingly, one in eight teens and one in 33 children have clinical depression. Now that's scary.
I was also surprised to read on their Web site that less than half of those who suffer from depression seek treatment. People who don't seek treatment generally feel embarrassed or view it as a personal weakness rather than an illness. The good news is, depression is treatable -- 80 percent of people who seek treatment show improvement.
So for the post today, I've listed the top searched antidepressants on AOL Search. It seems that I see at least several ads a day for antidepressants (maybe I just read too many health articles!) and I'm sure you do, too. Before taking any medication, especially for a serious condition, you should always do your research.
You can read more about depression on AOL Body and search for depression treatment on AOL Search.

3. Zoloft

To the person who says vitamins are the answer. You must be related to Tom Cruise..Until you are depressed and see no hope you can't make such claims..antidepressants are a Godsend with therapy and under a pyschiatrists guidance and care..vitamins and food just don't do it, how naive

I've fought depression all my life... Meds are not the answer... You have to change the things that make you depressed... Trust me, it's the best way... Chemical dependency will just make you a drug addict.

I agree. I have depression and have been taking paxil which has been helping me a lot. I tried taking vitamins, exercising, not eathing certain trigger foods which helped but didn't completely cure me. I am one of the people who needed to take futher actions to get the help I really needed. For some people you don't need to take drugs but for me I did which isn't a bad thing at all. If you are feeling depressed look into a lot of things first because you could have a inlarged thyroid gland or some other medical condition that is making you depressed. I wish the best for everyone! No one deserves to live life depressed!

Don't take them. I've tried a few. You'll spend money, get fat, and not want sex; don't do it.
Exercise, eat better, and talk to anyone you can.

I ditched a few people who were making life hell, and magically my depression lifted. No Prozac needed.

For those who think that food and exercise are the answer, and that depression is anger held in, think again. I think I have good reason to be depressed, I recently lost my beloved husband and parents. So don't act like you know it all, unless you've walked in my shoes. And yes, I am taking antideppressents, they are helping to keep me going.

I found that depresion is something that is born with you. it is in your genes. Some people learn to avoid it or fight it in a natural way some are no able to do so. But you will feel better if at the first sign of depresion you connect with something to put your mind into. Work, charity, family, friends, exercise, crafts, etc. Also theraphy helps when you believe in it and when you find a good therapist. Religion is also a tool if you don't become fanatic about. Best of all work on your self steem. Once you feel proud of yourself and capable you will conquer depresion a lot easier.

I tried St. John's Wort for a couple of weeks.. No effect.
Depression can occur in a variety of ways. In women, the primary cause of depression is a hormone imbalance resulting from menstrual cycles!

Cimbalta is working the best of any anti-depressant I have ever taken. I just had two major losses and did not turn into a basket case.I also have a therapist which helps immensely. I think people need both. I never knew that anger goes to the liver. It went into an ulcer for me.
Never think that depression will go away by itself as it just will not happen.
Psalms is good reading for depression.

I am getting tired of people's snide comments about depression. Depression is an illness which does have a physical cause. I became severely depressed after menopause and was told it was because of hormonal changes which were probably affecting my brain chemistry. Anti-depressants work precisely because they cause a PHYSICAL change in the brain. Isn't that why people take any kind of mind drugs in the first place--because it makes them feel better?? So why is it so hard for people to believe that depression can be helped by drugs. Believe me, if it hadn't been for Prozac, I would not be here writing this now. If you've never been through it, you can't understand it.

I have sold antidepressants for a pharmaceutical company for many years. The changes they have made in some patients lives are remarkable. The key to success is having therapy along with medication. None of these drugs are a magic bullet. It takes a complete plan of sessions with a professional and medications together. Depression is a disease of the neurotransmitters in the brain and sometimes it takes trying different medications until you get one that works for you. For anyone to minimize the impact of depression does not have a good understanding of the problem.

I take Prozac and Strattera both together. I found that these two Strattera is for ADHD but "acts" like an antidepressant.
I have had derealization anxiety on these two drugs. Like im not even im here. Prozac gets me in ok mood, strattera makes me worry and think have anxiety through out the day. To any doctors who prescribe this drug. Its not good.
Here is an link to a website that talks about medication about strattera needs to black boxed.

All I have to say is be careful with the antidepressants listed above! VERY careful! I was treated for years for depression and took each and every one of those medications at some point but got worse. When I was finally diagnosed with bipolar disorder and put on lamictal, the light at the end of the tunnel became apparent! Those meds up there are the WORST thing a bipolar person can take....antidepressants- "agitate" a person out of their depression- however, it creates pure bedlam in bipolar people because we are already agitated.
Please ask your de because I wish someone had found me out sooner- spare yourself many years of agony- I wish I could have!

My doctor put my on zoloft because I told him I was struggling with depression at times but I honestly felt like an old stump after I started taking it ...I was in a cloud most of the time and my husband said it was very hard trying to communicate with me. I threw the medicine away and haven't told my doctor yet because I don't want to go thru any more different kinds of antidepressants. Don't know what the answer is for sure.

CAROL IS RIGHT. I HAVE LOST ALMOST EVERYBODY AT AGE 46, AND THE ANTI DEPRESSANT I USE IS A MILD VALIUM. I STAY ON MY FEET WITH IT. I PRAY FOR CAROL TO GET ANY HAPPINESS SHE CAN. DEPRESSION IS A STRUGGLE.
