I did a post on top searched health conditions that you don't talk about a little while ago and depression was the No. 1 searched condition. Depression is no joke. According to Mental Health America, approximately 15 percent of people hospitalized for depression eventually take their own lives. They also state that depression is a common condition in the U.S. More than 19 million Americans have clinical depression. More interestingly, one in eight teens and one in 33 children have clinical depression. Now that's scary.
I was also surprised to read on their Web site that less than half of those who suffer from depression seek treatment. People who don't seek treatment generally feel embarrassed or view it as a personal weakness rather than an illness. The good news is, depression is treatable -- 80 percent of people who seek treatment show improvement.
So for the post today, I've listed the top searched antidepressants on AOL Search. It seems that I see at least several ads a day for antidepressants (maybe I just read too many health articles!) and I'm sure you do, too. Before taking any medication, especially for a serious condition, you should always do your research.
You can read more about depression on AOL Body and search for depression treatment on AOL Search.
Top searched depression medications on AOL Search:
1. Lexapro
2. Cymbalta
3. Zoloft
4. Wellbutrin
5. Effexor XR
6. Prozac
7. Paxil
8. Celexa

82. depression is situational and clinical. Situational needs time and patience and understanding and faith. Situation depressions are our reactions to those things of life over which we have no control. I know depression of either kind is because we have lost control and feel unempowered. Situational takes time or change.
If depression is genetic, this I stronly suggest. Leave carbohydrates alone for two weeks and see if you feel better. Meat, eggs, all the vegetables you want (the greener the better and lower in carbs) plain yogurt, full fat with no sugar or fruit. Notice there is no sugar, no grains or other starches.
. Even detox centers who are trying to dry out an alcoholic will restrict carbs...they turn to alcohol in some people. What is there to lose in trying this for two weeks? Drink plenty of water. I have experienced both situational and genetic clinical depression. I KNOW wheat products especially depress me and promote systemic yeast. Could be yeast is the underlying problem. You rid yourself of yeast when you take out sugars and carbs, especially grains.

84. I am a 26 year old female who has been dealing with depression for a bout 4 years. I know how it feels to have to rely on meds to make you fell better. I recently stop taking Zoloft, and I am having bad withdrawals. I am beginning to think that my depression is situational, because I am having a better time dealing with life situations. May I suggest something? I find that prayer works wonders. Before you start on any meds, try that first. It really has helped me. If anyone knows anything about lessening the effects of Zoloft withdrawal, please let me know.

85. I was hospitalized for an unrelated condition and would start crying whenever I spoke to my ex-wife or daughters on the phone. The psychiatrist said I was depressed and after a discussion prescribed Celexa, it being the least likely to clash with my other prescriptions. It works! I've been taking it for 3.5 years. Also trazodone for insomnia. No side effects other than dry mouth which I can live with.

86. You have no idea what depression can do until you have suffered from it. I grew up with my mom being in and out of hospitals since she was 21.She attempted to take her life several times..She is now 63 and still suffers from depression and a few other things mentally..After years of seeing her this way I guess it made me the same way..I do not want to be here if if weren't for my kids and grandbabies I would not be,however I cannot afford medication for mine therefore I must suffer with it and try to cope everyday with mine...My nerves are shot and out of control I go off at the slightess things and the sad part is that I know what effect this can have on my kids and I try to hide it from them, but I don't do a very good job.when they see me crying for no reason, what do I tell them??They are not stupid..But life go on and I continue to suffer with it and hope my kids do not carry it on after me...

88. I have suffered from anxiety and depression for years. I have been on numerous anti depressants(Effexor, Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Celexa, Lexapro) they all worked to some extent, but when I went into a severe depression due to family issues all around me I went to my doctor and insisted on something better, he put me on Cymbalta. In my case the commercials are so true, depression truly hurts and with this medication my physical as well as emotional symptoms ceased, I had never felt this good in my life. I know everyone has different responses but Cymbalta is truly a wonder drug for me.I would not trade it for anything else.

92. I hate it when people try to blame depression on a vitamin deficiency or lack of exercise or some other ridiculous cause. Clinical depression is a physical disease that manifests itself as a mental presentation. I have lived with it since 1996. I have been on so many different depression meds I don't even remember all the names. Between 1997 and 2000 I was hospitalized for depression 7 times. I have always been a small person, but I was put on Depakote at one point and gained 45 pounds. The Depakote didn't do anything for me but that. I have a number of other physical medical problems beside the depression also. Some of them were found when I was given tests while in the hospital for depression, and that is a fortunate thing for me. Finally, in 2000, my doctor tried Celexa for my depression and it actually worked! It has been an uphill road, but when you do find the right medication for your depression you will feel like a new person! NO more trying to hurt myself and spending all my time in the bed crying.
I still see my therapist every week, as this is an important component of treating depression. Research has shown that talk therapy and the right medication are the best tools to treat clinical depression. You do have to find the right therapist for you, however. I still have severe insomnia from depression and I have to take medication for that or I would never sleep, but it is manageable. I also now take Effexor XR at night to supplement the Celexa.
Clinical depression CAN be treated with medication and therapy, Not vitamins and taking a walk. Naturally you need to make sure you are taking the vitamins you need and getting the exercise you are able to get, but that is not going to stop depression.
Depression is no different than any other serious illness. Do NOT feel guilty - just get treatment!!!

94. Everyone feels dissappointed at some time in
their life...continuous
dissappointment can cause an imbalance in a person's life. Some
might turn to drugs...including smoking tobacco...and alcohol;
these
things will deplete the body of B vitamins.Interesting!
B-Complex is
used to treat depression! So, would it be safe to say that, lack
of B
vitamins caused by drugs and alcohol can lead to depression.I
know
when I was 60lbs over weight it was depressing. I let it get
out of
control and could not find a quick fix to correct the situation.
It
was depressing. I found a company that has products that helps
one
reach and maintain a healthy condition. One of the products,
called
"Experience" helped me to lose 3 inches from my waistline in
about
two months; and another product called, "Pure Trim" helped me to
shed
the pounds and keep them off and reduce cravings...I am really
excited
and would like to share this company with you.

95. my question is..... are u depressed if you think you are depressed...... are u depressed.... when u dont think u are.....
is there a fine line between sad and depressed.....
and are drug companies pushing this depression to push pills....
why are there more people supposively depressed today than years ago....
I believe one needs to seek their own way out of the tunnel of supposed depression..... and try all non medications first....

96. When I suffered from being depressed or had problems with my moods, I took herbs not drugs. I know they say most drugs on the market are made from herbs also but I don't suffer any side effects taking herbs alone. I don't believe in drugs so a doctor can get a kickback off of them.

97. Let's see if we can get a few things corrected....The notion, if not reality, of depression is quite complex..as we can see from the above...sometimes apparently situational, 'nutrituional', existential, chemical....there may be in the end a variety of 'depressions', with different etiology (causes)..and hopefully, treatment.
For those of you taking medication that "works"...good!...so we understand...for far too many, it doesn't..any of them, frankly...which is why there appear an abundance and series of drugs and a bunch of 'alternative' remedies (so we understand 2, if THOSE consistently 'worked', they wouldn't be 'alternatives' anymore, huh?)...so we know 3 and as well...'valium' is NOT an anti-depressant....
Anger is NOT stored in the 'liver' either....that's a kind of cute anachronism, harkeneing back to the "four humours".....liver, spleen, and 2 kinds of bile...damn, I didn't think there were anymore adherents...next, they'll be checking your poop! (they used to...for like....'signs', you know?)
In truth, as a practitioner...and despite advertising...we really don't know enough yet to be able to meet our own and public expectations...and need...across a number of domains. There are waaay too many diseases and conditions we don't understand well enough, depression among them. Too, we have no CAT or MRI tests to assist in diagnoses....'recall', observation, the testimony of others???...hardly satisfactory or 'reliable, huh??
It makes my head hurt....

98. I was diagnosed with treatment resistent depression. I have suffered for yeas and taken every med out there. They either do not work, or I have adverse or allergic reactions to them, at times I have had to be hospitalized. Those times were mainly from use of MAOI. I recently had VNS (vagas nerve stimulation). It is a slow process and and seeing a little result. It takes time. However, with depression, you sometimes run out of time. I feel there is no hope of every getting control over this instead of it controlling me. I am tired of fighting this demon. I am recenting added the emsam patch to help with the VNS. Praying this will work, for it is my last hope. Throwing in the towel after this. I have suffered all I can stand. I hope others have a better prognosis.

99. I've suffered from bi-polar depression for over 17 years. It started when I was 11. Some things are easy to change...maybe what you are doing in your life, i.e. friends, lifestyle, drinking, eating...whatever. However, for those that don't need DRUGS, I am very happy for you. I, unfortunately, am not one of those individuals. When not on the medications, I think about suicide and other irrational things. I'm not saying drugs are the answer for everyone but don't put it down either. Not everyone has the same symptoms, the same anxiety and/or pressures in life. In essence, not everyone is the same.
I hate being on them, but without them I don't function like a normal person. I'm not a drug addict as someone put in a post earlier. I don't have to take the drugs but I would prefer to not think about suicide. I would prefer to be alive. I know everyone's story and thoughts are different but I have gone through so much. Life has its ups and downs...no doubt. But if you need help, get it. Don't be afraid to ask, to tell someone. You don't have to live with Depression as a constant in your life, granted whatever method you use to control it. Life is worth living...sometimes you need a chance to see that.
