Home safety is incredibly important, yet it seems to be something that people tend to overlook. Shouldn't it be at the top of our priority lists? After all, what's more important than keeping our homes and families safe?A little over six months ago I purchased my first home. Home security was never something I had really thought about until then. But what if something happened? Now that I am completely settled into my new place, I thought it would be a good time to invest in a home security system. But where do I start?
I decided to check out which home security options people were searching for on AOL Search. Clearly home security systems are the No. 1 search followed by safes (definitely need to get one of these). A security camera seems a little out of control, but a smoke detector and a carbon monoxide detector are must-haves.
What kind of security system do you have in your house? Check out AOL Shopping to see what solutions are out there. Or you can search for home security on AOL Search.
Top Searched Home Security Items on AOL Search:
1. Home security systems
2. Safes
3. Security camera
4. Smoke detectors
5. Fire extinguishers
6. Alarm systems
7. Wireless security system
8. Carbon monoxide detectors
9. Fire alarm
10. Motion detectors

I agree with you, alot of people over look their home safety. every time me and my husband buy a home we have http://www.homeinspectionspecialist.com inspect it for us and they always tell us things we would have never know about our home or our safety. i look forward to all the updates.

2. I think if Dario Franchitti and Ashley Judd would have had an alarm system working, they would not have had an intruder brake in. Hey Dario, check out my site Http://www.freewebs.com/dadracing Thanks for looking On my way...

4. Hi! Security was never too much of a concern for me until after my son was born. Robbery wasn't the issue, but I never knew what was lurking in my own home until we bought a carbon monoxide detector, and a lead paint test kit. Both helped us have peace of mind, and even lowered our home insurance rates.
The other thing that happened after my son was born is that I was more concerned about being prepared for 'anything' than I ever was before. Our area is prone to storm blackouts, so I purchased an emergency kit online. I go for easy shopping, so I found some great selections at http://ezgobag.com.
They have things like flashlights, water bottles, car chargers, etc, all of which don't need batteries, great for having in the event of a blackout!
Hope that helps! ;)

5. I heard about ezgobag.com on the news. After 9-11 I got all weirded out a about being safe. I bought the world's BEST flashlight on EZGoBag. They def have a bunch of quality safety items reasonably priced. Now, if they only had a man that could come over and fix things for me that would be great!

6. I second Rebecca's concern about the Emergency kit. They say you should be able to take care of yourself for 3 days before any help or relief might be available.
I tried to put one together following the ready.gov website. In the end that wasn't very reassuring, so I bought a commercial kit. (I ended up getting our kits from http://www.ezgobag.com too.)
I got a couple of the backpack models, plus the small ones for our cards, and one to send off to my son at college.
Im not paranoid about end of the world or anything, but watching Katrina/wildfire/ etc families have to leave their homes because they didn't have drinkable water, food, heat, really got me.
The kits we bought have everything that is recomennded and more. Don'y forget to add personally relevant stuff like medicines, some cash. We stashed a travel scrabble game and some dry clothes too.

8. Hi Sarah,
Thanks for your recommendation on EZGoBag! I got an emergency kit from the Red Cross, figuring if anyone knew how to put together a disaster kit, it would be them...was I wrong! Their kit had the right stuff, I guess, but it just looked so thrown together, and the bag was c---. I guess they're not planning on you actually 'using' it much, because the seams started ripping right away, and I didn't do much more than cart it back and forth from home to car, etc.
So I packed everything into one of my husband's old backpacks, which is working, but I was generally disappointed by them.
However, I'm in the market for a new kit or two, since I AM trucking this thing back and forth a lot....gonna get something I can leave in the car, so thanks for pointing me in the EZGobag direction, their stuff definitely looks MUCH better, and I really like that there's a deck of cards in the 2-man kit. Shows that someone has a sense of fun! :)

14. If your looking for home security do not purchase from Protect America. I have had one of their systems for over a year now and it started off working fine I thought it still was working fine until it went off one day and no one called to see if we were ok. Well when I called Protect America and asked them why they told me that they have not been receving a signal from my system since Feb. of 2006. Well you would think that if they were not receving a signal they would have called to let me know instead of letting it go for over 10 month (great customer service uh?)so I have been paying for services NOT rendered. I tried to get out of the rip off 3 year contract and they told me there was nothing they could do for me so I am stuck paying for something I am not getting. If your looking go with a good company and good reputation and not the one who has a low price. I`m 58 and still learning lessons every day, the scammers are out there be careful and do your home work.

15. You really missed a BIG one..residential sprinklers. One sprinkler can extinguish the fire in your home 98% of the time, 1.8% are with 2 heads. A smoke detector is a must as well as CO monitor but to save everyone includingthe pet and home, residential sprinklers are the key! Fire Marshal Bill

18. ALL YOU REALLY NEED TO INVEST IN IS A VERY GOOD HOME SECURITY SIGN AND THAT'S IT!! IF A ROBBER SEES THE HOME SECURITY SIGN SUCH AS "BRINKS" OR "ADT" OR WHATEVER YOU CATCH THE DRIFT.. THEN THEY WOULD RATHER TAKE THEIR CHANCES WITH A HOUSE THAT DOES NOT HAVE A SIGN OR A STICKER ON THE DOOR STATING "HOME SECURITY"
PLENTY OF PEOPLE WASTE MONEY AND INVEST (IF YOU WANT TO CALL IT THAT) IN "HOME SECURITY SYSTEMS" WHEN INSTEAD OF SPENDING COSTLY MONEY EVERYDAY ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS GET A GOOD SIGN AND FAKE THE ROBBER OUT BY GIVING HIM A GOOD SCARE...HE WILL PASS YOUR HOUSE UP AND NOT TAKE HIS CHANCES....TRUST ME

19. I firmly believe in having a good dog - but he is a member of the family too, and if we arent home, he goes as the house does! Not much love there.. A security system, sprinkler system, carbon and smoke detectors are there to protect whether home or not. And BTW, dont use Brinks or ADT - they sicker you in with a cheap system (and they both were CHEAP!! Were false alarming all the time, and neither had good service...) Use a company that is local and cares. We used a company here in the Washington DC area and have been with them for 12 years, NO PROBLEMS!! American Home Security. I think their web is www.wireitall.com. Anyway, look out for your dog too, and the cat - get a security system. And you dont have to take the alarm for a walk or clean out its litter box either!!! ;-)

20. I have most of the things you have mentioned to protect my home except for a security alarm. When we took out home owners insurance our insurance agent was happy when we told him we have wrought iron on all our windows and doors. I makes it a lot more difficult for robbers to get in and among the things you all have mentioned I thought this would be a good thing to also have. We also have a dog.
