Home safety is incredibly important, yet it seems to be something that people tend to overlook. Shouldn't it be at the top of our priority lists? After all, what's more important than keeping our homes and families safe?A little over six months ago I purchased my first home. Home security was never something I had really thought about until then. But what if something happened? Now that I am completely settled into my new place, I thought it would be a good time to invest in a home security system. But where do I start?
I decided to check out which home security options people were searching for on AOL Search. Clearly home security systems are the No. 1 search followed by safes (definitely need to get one of these). A security camera seems a little out of control, but a smoke detector and a carbon monoxide detector are must-haves.
What kind of security system do you have in your house? Check out AOL Shopping to see what solutions are out there. Or you can search for home security on AOL Search.
Top Searched Home Security Items on AOL Search:
1. Home security systems
2. Safes
3. Security camera
4. Smoke detectors
5. Fire extinguishers
6. Alarm systems
7. Wireless security system
8. Carbon monoxide detectors
9. Fire alarm

22. You know whats funny? Its the people that say Get a Dog or Get a gun. Ive been in the security industry for 15 years. All I need is some hamberger for the dog and your not always home to use your gun. That would really suck if someone broke into your house and you came home and got SHOT by your own gun...

23. All, I'm a law enforcement officer and my house was broken into. I was a victim of "I never thought it would happen to me". After the incident I researched a few diffent home security systems. I have invested in a home security system with ADT. I would highly recommend them. It was worth the peace of mind and the discount on my homeowners insurance. Oh, and one more thing...most break-ins happen during the day and through a main door. Dogs are good - but not for somebody who works to make a living.

25. Using the alarm system is what makes it effective. Many people have had break ins because the alarm was not on. Exterior lights left on at night, and using good dead bolt locks- all of those combined secure any home. A dog is great for alerting us to noise, but unless you have an attack dog, don't use yours for security. Too many break ins happen because people don't use basic, affordable precautions.

26. How about 3 large dogs, Brinks Security System and a 38 Special. Maybe overkill, but anyone that tries to break into my house better be prepared to get through three levels of security!!!

29. After 9/11 Security has became one of the top priorities, so is business and homes. Nowadays it is very affordable to have an estate of the art alarm system or cameras if you call at 305-796-4082 to have a free security analysis by Victor.

30. Hey, to whomever posted the coupon code for http://ezgobag.com, THANK YOU!!! I just got a pretty decent savings on my order...I know this is really a home security thread, but I'm psyched to have a solid emergency kit on the way. I live in a pretty safe building, thank goodness, so haven't worried too much about home security in the past, but all your info. has been really helpful.

31. Don't forget one of the most important ones. It's called the 911-Light. www.911Light.com. This is a flashing strobe light that activates when you dial 911. It helps the rescuers find your house fast in an emergency!
What good are all those other systems when help can't even find you!! Even the pizza guy has problems!

32. Everyone should have a smoke and co2 detector. Burglar alarms are also good but not fool proof.I have a big dog. He's good too but might be bought off with a big steak, I can't really say. He barks a lot. I think in most cases that's enough.
There are other kinds of alarms that give warning when you are not at home. My company KeepSafeAlarms.com offers an alarm that keeps things safe when you're not at home. One end goes on your bag, purse, violin, child, whatever. You keep the other end on your person. When the two get too far apart the end you're holding alarms and vibrates. Pretty cool, right? Available at the above web site or on ebay store keepsafe511. I hope you all keepsafe.

33. I do have the best in a security system even to the point I can have up to 20 items in the yard with murcury switches to the security system. If they move it set the alarm and identys it at the main pannel. I do beleave in addition to that everyone should have a good dog and take the Georgia Gun Safty Coarse and get a good quality pistol to keep beside you bed in case they still get in. Don't draw it unless you plan to use it.

34. I was a police detective for many many years and I interviewed hundreds of burglars during that time. I used to ask them What homes would you not attempt to break into and the most common reply I got (about 99% of the time) was a residence with a dog that was known to bark! Security systems do deter a lot of potential thieves but they also know that most folks never activate the system when their home. Most of these guys will case out your neighborhood during the day and many will knock or ring your bell often posing as a solicitor of some type to determine if an animal lives in the residence. Remember these guys don't want to be detected and an alert dog with a bark regardless of size will ruin their evening. Be careful out there folks. Smith and Wesson also works well and if they survive they can contemplate their stupidity in the local emergency room. Aim center of mass (chest area) and don't stop shooting until they drop.

37. Alarms and cameras are great, but ideally strong windows and doors are the first line of defense. Our county sheriff returned home from church to find his alarm blaring the police in his driveway and his home burglarized, after the perps kicked in a window. He surmised that after the alarm went off they quickly snatched what they could, his gun and cell phone, and made a hasty exit, because they left a lot of valuables behind. I have solid core exterior doors and the lock bolts perpetrate an inch and a half into the frame, which makes it difficult to kick in. I also have bars on my windows that can be opened from the inside in an emergency. Having a large loud German Shepard doesn't hurt either. In thirty five years we have never had a problem.
