My girlfriend called me the other day all stressed out because she just started a new job and, on top of that, she's trying to plan for her July wedding. Her stressful new job is causing her to stay up late, overeat and smoke more than ever before. It's also putting a damper on her relationship with her fiancé -- not a good way to start a marriage.
After some consoling words of "everything is going to be fine," we hung up the phone and I began to wonder, "How do some people lead stress-free lives?" Some people seem to be able to handle every conflict and overloaded to-do list with ease, leaving the rest of us envious of their stress-free lifestyle.
Today, I set out to find their secrets. I decided to look at what our top searched stress-relieving products are on AOL Search. Before my search, I thought expensive things like spa gift certificates for massages and facials would be the most searched, but I was surprised to find that simple things like lighting a candle or brewing some tea for relaxation are even more common. In the end, it looks like candles, tea, hammocks and water fountains are at the top.
Do you know of any good stress-relieving products that did not show up on our list? If so, please tell us about them. If you're looking to reduce stress in your life, check out AOL Shopping or try searching for stress relievers on AOL Search.

5. Adopting a dog?!! That adds so much stress to your life, cleaning up after it, listening to it cry at night. Then you have to rember to feed it, take it out, buy the cage and supplies. When you go someplace where you can't bring it for a long time you have to get someone to watch it. Not a good idea if your looking for a stress free life.

7. I have been a longtime sufferer of stress and anxiety. After years of searching for a cure, a therapist recommended reading "Relaxation Response" - Dr Benson. Best book ever read!!!. Learn the techniques, practice visualization (imagine being on a remote island, perfect weather, palm trees, no kids, no job, no stress of any kind). I learned this years ago and it has helped me so much it is amazing. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy just thinking about it. It is cheaper than a 'real vacation' and usually more fun - vacations themselves are stressful - (too much money and not enough fun). Try it.

9. I have a set of electronic wind chimes in my office that I got at Bed bath and beyond. I love them they help me. They are on a stand and a fan underneath them blows ever so often to make them chime and there is a setting of how much you want it to do it.

10. I have fibromyalgia and have searched for relaxation solutions-massage being the best and if you search for a massage school near you, perhaps they offer as mine does very inexpensive massages by the students and I have never yet had a bad one after 10 years of using this method. Also, an aquarium with colored fish (inexpensive type)with pump- incredibly relaxing and quietly listening to massage-type music on tapes. And, of course, the other above recommended types of self-preservation.

12. An aquarium of colorful fish is a great stress reliever...see them at Dr.'s offices and dentists all of the time. It's a proven fact.
Also surrounding yourself in a room of plants or outdoor area with lots of plants.
Warm bathes with soothing music.
When driving...singing with the radio overcomes your urge to have road rage.
Just my 2 cents worth!

14. I suffered from stress and anxiety so bad that I couldn't function properly because I couldn't relax/sleep due to over-thinking about everything and everyone, but still had to work, cook, clean and take care of my family. I did and still do the massages, visualizations, deep breathing, tension-relaxation techniques but they didn't help to the point I needed so my doctor put me on a low dose of zoloft (mg)and that seems to have done the trick but I'm still trying to find ways to do it without being on medication. Any suggestions, welcomed!

15. I'm a high school teacher. Talk about Stress! To relieve stress, the first thing I do is take a walk without my cel phone. Focus on breathing and walking. A heated "Bed Buddy" (1 1/2 min in microwave) around my neck and sitting with my eyes closed for 20 min. works wonders ($14.99 at Walgreens). Lady Grey's tea. self hypnotism. Nature Sounds on Ipod. bubble bath. glass of wine. aah.

16. Personally, I love to go home at night out in the country and stand on my porch and see the trees surrounding my 5 acres and listen to all the birds (and frogs in the summertime) and hear nothing else. NO sirens, no street noise, I do hear a car once in a while going by to go home, and in the morning, same thing. Quiet. Relaxing. I look forward to this when I'm at work in the city during the day. Can't wait to go home. Cooking is also fun when you like to do it. It's great to cook a quick and delicious dish.

17. I find that prayer and reading the Bible is a great stress reliever. I am a Christian and the promises that are contained in the Bible have inherent power. We release this power when we speak the scriptures out loud. Cast your cares upon Him for He cares for you.

19. I go to the beach and sit in a quiet place the size of the ocean makes your worries seem small. Also, all my life I put on music I enjoy, light candles in the bathroom, pour a glass of wine and draw a very warm bath. I have a bathpillow and I sit back sip on my wine and all the stress goes away. I go outside at night lay on a blanket look up and all my troubles melt away.

20. Hey If it's your job, stressing you out. Just QUIT!!!! Get another job. They are out there.
No job is worth your health. I am walking out the door (to many a surprise, here at work) for the last time today. After almost three years here, it is time. Boss is an ass, wife works here too and of course she's better than everyone else. And the OTHER boss cant stand up to anyone. So I am leaving this stressfull situation for another job that I know will be great. Good buy Lexapro. Because for the last year of working with the WIFE. My doctor put me on meds for stress......
