I have a friend who just told me that she is suffering from depression. She's actually been battling it for a few years with different types of antidepressants. I can't imagine what she has been going through.Depression is a common condition in the U.S. According to Mental Health America, more than 19 million Americans have clinical depression. More interestingly, one in eight teens and one in 33 children have clinical depression. Approximately 15 percent of people hospitalized for depression eventually take their own lives -- a tragic statistic.
The good news is, depression is treatable -- 80 percent of people who seek treatment show improvement. I decided to find out what the most searched antidepressants are on AOL Search and discovered that Lexapro, Cymbalta and Zoloft are in the top three spots on the list. (Please remember: Before taking any medication, especially for a serious condition, you should always consult your doctor.)
Do you know of any depression treatments that did not show up on our list? If so, please tell us about them. You can read more about depression on AOL Body and search for depression treatments on AOL Search.

2. Just a warning about Effexor.....a friend of ours was on Effexor and tried to get off of it with major problems; as a matter of fact she is still battling the withdrawal issues. So please, anyone, stay away from Effexor.

3. I've been taking Buspar for about 8 months. It helps with anxiety besides depression. I take 4 15 mg tablets a day, and it has really seemed to help me. I have taken Zoloft, Prozac and Cymbalta in the past, but had a reaction of extreme weight gain, which sure didn't help with the depression. The Buspar does not have that side effect, and helps even out my disposition. It's really worked for me.

4. Please avoid Remeron at all costs! It is LETHAL! I took it for a year and wanted to kill myself, not to mention when my cousin went off of it, two weeks later he hung himself. It makes you do irrational things and you become dependant on it to sleep and function!!!! I beg you STAY AWAY FROM REMERON

You daughter just had the wrong doctors. If you don't take the meds for the depression it will take a long time to go forward.

9. For those who would scoff at the use of anti-depressants, really ought to do more research. Meds like these help the process towards recovery, but most of the work has to come from the patient. From what therapists have told me over the years, is that psyche meds help 20%, and the other 80% has to come from us.
These meds are meant to correct chemical imbalances, so that the patient can focus better on recovery.

10. I read the story you have posted about depression and I'm a bit puzzeled as to why you don't mention that depression medication has bad side affects. I tried using cymbalta, and I felt worse by the day. After 3 months, I was having very unhealthy thoughts, so I stopped! I also tried effexor, and my headaches were so bad I couldn't get out of bed. I was so dizzy that everything would spin around me! It was awful! So I stopped taking this one also. What does one do when there is nothing out there that is helping, but instead making you worse? Why isn't this mentioned? You make it sound os attractive, by writing down a list of these medications, but you forget to mention the side effects, and some are even deadly. So if someone has an answer for me, and I doubt that anyone does, than please don;t hesitate to e-mail me. Thanks!

14. My ex-wife has been on lexapro and has been a total "B" from day one. even she admits to this. that's why after 19 years of marriage i said i want a divorce, and we are now divorced and i moved to mexico to enjoy life. i have talked to our daughter and i feel so bad for her being stuck with her mom when she is a "B". but enough about her, heck i wished she was on it sooner that way i could have moved down here a lot sooner.

17. There is no such thing as a safe drug is there? I agree that most everything is caused from an imbalance. Traditional Asian Medicine was and is based on treating the ailment and not the symptoms. Their use of herbs and fruits are a proven method and have been used for 5000 years. Go to the source and bring your body back in balance and allow it to start healing itself. 18. You guys are so juvenile. So many people that take depression medication aren't even depressed! Most people pop pills just to get high or chill out. The ones that get used the msot are Paxil, Prozac, Vicodin, Deseryl, Desipramine, Xanax....these are the most common ones. But more people take drugs that aren't even anti-depressants!! like percocet, oxycontin, heroin, meth, and most people just smoke weed!!! get a life, and dont talk about stuff you know nothing about

19. Whoever the idiot was that wrote don't take meds see a funny movie get on with life or whatever obviously has never experienced depression. I fight every day not to take my own life and to just try to work like hell with my therapist to make sure I am here to raise my kids. Bottom line is don't make stupid remarks about something you obviously don't understand!

20. First, it is stabilizers, not stablizers. Second, behavior influences attitude. One should try acting happy until the real happiness kicks in. For example, you know that your handwriting says alot about you. Well, if you force yourself to use the writing style of a happy person, eventually the rest of your body will(might)catch up. Good luck to all those in pain and misery!
