I attended a posh party last weekend where they were only serving top-shelf liquor. When I asked for a margarita, the bartender's response was. "Would you like Cabo Wabo or Patron Silver tequila?" Not being much of a liquor connoisseur, I opted for Cabo Wabo. I usually drink my margaritas with Jose Cuervo tequila, mojitos with Bacardi rum and white russians with Absolut Vodka. So as you can see, I'm not that familiar with top-shelf liquors. Maybe it's because I enjoy cocktails more than straight up liquor chilled or on the rocks.
I decided to find out which liquor brands are popular among our AOL Search users. As you can see from the list below, the most searched are also the most common types of whiskey, rum, vodka and bourbon.
Did your favorite brand of liquor show up on our list? If not, please tell us about it or try searching for liquor brands on AOL Search.

23. While I like a vodka/selzer/lime [maybe a dash of coke for a "cloudy"], when it comes to smoothness, nothing beats a Balvenie [at least 15 years old] single malt!!! Oh, my, now that's "SMOOTH"!

28. If you drink your Alcohol in mixed drinks, DO NOT pay for premium brands!
Torada/Tiquila
Popov/Vodka
Rico Bay/Rum
Canadian Mist/Blended Whisky
But for straight up Burbon it's always, W.L. Weller with a coke back.

29. I just tried a new cocktail called the Sabai Sabai that is made with a new spirit called Mekhong from Thailand. 1.5 shots of Mekhong, 1.5 shots fresh squeezed lemon juice, .75 shot simple sugar syrup, finger pinch of sweet Thai basil and club soda. It taste better than a mojito. Try it.

30. Regarding tequila, remember that almost every distiller produces three types (grades?) of tequila; blanco (white), reposado and anejo, with the anejo being the better of the three. You have to couple the type of tequila with the brand to detemine which you really prefer. Just because it comes from a particular distiller (brand) does not mean that they are all the best of a particular type. I prefer Don Julio Anejo but also enjoy Cazadores Anejo on occasion. Some of the best are not even imported from Mexico since they are made in limited quantities. Take a vacation to Mexico, the State of Jalisco, and spend an evening in one of the upscale tequila bars. You will sample some excellent tequilas unavailable to us in the USA.

39. I am a vodka snob!! I love the top shelf varieties for sure. The newest one I am in love with is Ocean Vodka from Maui, Hawaii. I also enjoy Roth, made from California grapes, Idol, from France also made with french grapes and amazing water from France. Good standards are always Grey Goose, Belvedere, Ciroc, & Chopin.

40. unless you are using it for a mixed drink, the only tequila is Anejo. And there are a ton of those out there, so go with the 100% Blue Agave. One of the best, relatively cheap: Milagro Single Barrel Reserve.
