Searching For a New Mattress?

After having the same Sealy mattress for over 10 years, I discovered that it might be time to break down and buy a new mattress. The first clue was when I started tossing and turning all night long and couldn't get a good night's sleep. The second clue was when I held on to the edge of the mattress so I wouldn't roll toward the sunken part. So, now that I've decided I need a new king-size mattress, how can I find the perfect one?

My mattress-buying outing was a little stressful. As I walked into the store filled with beds, I was quickly approached by a sales rep. Then the questions started rolling: Are you looking for a firm, soft, posturepedic, pillow top mattress? How many springs, coils and wire gauges would you like it to have, or are you looking for a latex mattress? Do you prefer a Fleetwood, Simmons or Spring? At that point I was so overwhelmed.

For a quick second I thought about going home and doing some research. But since I just want something comfortable that will give me a good night's sleep, I figured my best bet was to try some out. So I lay down on about 20 mattresses and started testing them out. I really enjoyed the viscoelastic and tempurpedic mattresses. Both were very relaxing. I can see why the memory foam mattress made it to the top of our list. The mattress actually conforms to your body and reduces pressure points, which is extremely comfortable but more expensive than spring mattresses.

I had to try a Hastens Mattress to find out what all the hype was about. It's actually handmade to each customer's specific wishes and uses all-natural horsehair, cotton, linen and wool. But at $50K a mattress it was easy to say 'No thanks!' Then I lay on a Serta pillowtop mattress and it was like lying on millions of cotton balls – super comfortable. Sold ... no further convincing needed! Now with my new mattress and mattress cover, I always have a good night's sleep.
