Up until a few months ago, I always fed my dog regular dog food that I bought in the pet aisle of the grocery store and sprinkled a little cheese or chicken broth on top. But, the last time I took her to the veterinarian for her yearly checkup I heard the dreaded news that she's having liver problems that could be due to the added "human food" to her diet.
She won't eat the old dog food on its own so now I'm stuck looking for healthy but tasty dog food for my poor pooch. She is very picky about her food and I'm worried that I'm about to head into a month or two where all I'll do is try different brands until I find one she likes. Like most of us, I live on a budget and I can't afford to spend too much on food for my dog, so I need to find a reasonably priced dog food brand that will provide her with the daily nutrition she needs.
Not sure where to start on my quest, I decided to look into what the top searched dog food brands are among our users. Many holistic and natural dog foods topped the list including Wellness, Evolve and Pinnacle. Other popular natural dog foods include Eukanuba, Innova and the BARF diet. The BARF diet stands for "biologically appropriate raw food." The living enzymes in this dog food are believed to be the secret to a healthy dog. The BARF diet is a sort of doggy lifestyle, not just a food, so owners must mix up a dish at meal time for their pooch along with the rest of their family.
Do you know of any other dog food brands that did not show up on our list? If so, please tell us about them. Try searching for dog food on AOL Search or purchase some dog food through AOL Shopping.

Please do not believe that the addition of human foods caused this! If anything, it was more apt to be ingredients in the dog foods! Veterinarians, unless they have taken special courses in nutrition know mostly 0 about what foods are good or bad and have no idea why.
Most grocery store brands are not a high quaility food. You can feed a reasonably high quaility which is affordable by doing research on the ingredients and the company.
There are many, many people who home cook for their pets and have for years and their pets are healthy. Others have fed raw for years with the same results.
Many have feed low quality foods for years and their pets have lived a long life. But when an animals develops some issues for no good reason, and no medical reasons can be found, and they are being fed a lower quality food, then that is certainly a place to start examining. The Pet Food industry has duped us and help to shorten the lives of our beloved pets, along with forcing many of us to over-vaccinate.

I buy my dogs life's Abundance Health Food For Pets, from http://www.petwellnessstore.com/ . You can't beat their all natural holistic dog food. I started out by ordering a free sample from their web site and have never thought of switching since.

My Beardie has had a bout with cancer and continual skin problems. 2 1/2 months ago I switched him to an all raw meat diet and he has responded very well even though I had my doubts. His hair is gorgeous, he has very few 'hot spots', his teeth are getting cleaner and he is a bundle of energy. He is 9 years old and is healthier than he has ever been. I with I had known about this 9 years ago!

We recommend Natural Balance, as they are one of the few brands that consistently pass our Healthy Label Test with flying colors. They make several dog foods, ranging from vegetarian, to low calorie to food for active dogs.
If you are having trouble getting your dog to eat a new food, here are some tips...
First, serve the new natural dog food diet in a place where your dog is comfortable and used to eating.
Try mixing the new food in with the old using these transition guidelines based on what kind of food you are switching to:
1. New brand of same food – 4 to 5 day transition.
2. Moist to dry food (or vice-versa) – 4 to 5 day transition. If going from moist to dry, try adding a little warm water to the dry food.
3. Raw dog food – 4 to 5 week transition.
To make it a bit tastier, warm it up. PeTA also suggests adding nutritional yeast, olive oil, tomato sauce, powdered kelp, baby food that does not contain onions or other seasonings to make the food smell and taste better.
If you still get a black nose in the air or if your dog eats around the new food, it may be time to try fasting. If your dog goes a couple of days without eating at all, hold strong! Your dog’s instinct to survive will not let him starve himself. Experts have found that some dogs will go 2 to 3 days without eating a new food, but they always come around.
Two days should be plenty.
If your pet does not eat (or eats very little) after 2 days, it could be a sign that they are in suboptimal health. You should visit your local holistic vet to work on natural treatments that will improve their overall health.

Hi all,
I just read the article and am stunned that the vet would make such an idiotic remark. I've raised several dogs through my life and all live longgggggg
lives. I have a rat terrier and 2 jacks right now. My rat is 13 1/2 and she has been fed dog food as well as human food since I rescued her at 6 weeks. She eats everything from sweet potatoes to burgers!
Ohyes, she's as healthy as a ox. lol

It's really important to be aware of the pet recall on several foods. If you type in Menu Foods on the computer, you will be forwarded to a complete list of all foods that were recalled and that killed many dogs and cats. There are many people at defendourpets.org which are working on getting a bill passed in the Senate that will help insure the quality of pet food. Just don't get anything for humans or pets that comes from China. That is what started the deaths of thousands of pets.

I took in a little rescue dog that was born with little or no immune system and we have had to battle mange...the company that I bought the meds from recommended changing her food to one called Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul....I was able to buy it at a Feed and Grain Store close by fortunately...it seems to be helping...

Despite what the people who obviously have a vested interest in the website they're pushing, NEVER trust pet food purchased over the internet by a small company. No one is overseeing what they are selling, and checking it for quality control.

There is no species on the planet meant to eat processed foods only. No human, canine or feline can sustain health found only in a bag of 'dead" food. Cooked, processed bag food is the reason the life span has plummeted from 17 yrs. to an average of 12. if that happened to the human race we'd be up in arms trying to find out why. Raw foods are not only an animal's normal way of eating it is essential for their health. The research is there and has been for many, many years. it is not a movement nor a different way of life but it is the way to a maitenance free animal as nature intended!

Human grade meats minus the spices are fine and healthy for dogs! Human food products have tighter restrictions than what they are allowed to use to make our pet foods. There are many great and easy to prepare dog food and treats you can prepare for your dog at home, using the same ingredients you use to feed the rest of your family.
