Unless you're a super hero, chances are you've needed to take pain medication before. And when you were looking for pain relief, you really needed something that would work fast to dull your pain. With migraines, aches, sprains and broken bones, the list of ways your body can hurt is endless. So when I got a headache yesterday, I decided to look and see what other AOL users rely on for pain relief. The widely known drug Vicodin came in at the top of our search list, probably because it can be used as a mild-to-severe pain reliever, depending on the potency. It is commonly prescribed for anything from pain after dental work to knee pain relief. Pain killers, such as Celebrex, are also a wonderful relief for those suffering from arthritis pain.
If you prefer a topical relief for your pain, a surprising medical treatment that I had never heard of appeared on our list. BIOFREEZE comes as a spray, gel or roll-on medicine and contains a special herbal extract from a South American holly shrub.
Some of these drugs are so strong that you need a prescription for them. Others you can find at an online pharmacy or your local pharmacy, like CVS. It all depends on how fast you need relief!

If I don't have a prescription for something like dental surgery, I like liqui-gel aleve. I take 3 instead of two and it works well. I buy my drugs as well as all my health and beauty type stuff at drugstore.com. I buy through http://www.fatcrumbs.com which gives me cash back on every purchase, as wll as coupon and discount codes.

Please be careful taking Advil or any Ibuprophen. A few years ago I took Advil for leg pains and ended up almost destroying my kidneys. Now I take darvocet and that works great.

I have used vicodin with great success. Did not stay on it long for fear of addiction. Has anyone been addicted to it?

I have been using biofreeze for about a year now for neck pain. I have to say I have become addicted to this stuff because it works wonders for my chronic neck pain.

A small caveat here...when Aleve first came out, I used it briefly---but found it no better than advil for my needs. Last week a doc suggested I try it again for knee pain from arthritus...and I found myself in an ER at 3Am...I have developed an strong allergic reaction to it...which I am told can happen at any time---feom just about anything, even something you've used for years.
So OTC doesn't mean "safer" than perscription....

I suspect the author of the article might realize later, that drugs are usually "prescribed" not subscribed... what about good old fashioned aspirin or advil? Is that too common now days?
By zapple on Aug 16th 2008 at 3:03PM

If still looking for a prescription strength gel pain reliever for topical use, ask for a new one called Volteran - used in combination with also the BioFreeze, works great.

Actually you can take 4 Advil for pain which is equal to 1 prescription advil. So that is something to remember.

I think this article is a walking advertisement for pain medication. It provides to much prositive...even tells were you can get them on the internet. If they had listed both positive and negative, it would be ok. And maybe stressed to kids under the age of 18 to ask their parents.

Be careful when using thoes over the counter pain releavers daily they can build up in your system and cause a reaction with the person going to er room.
if your realy having daily pain ask the doctor for a cortazone or steriod shot it will last for months but you need to ask, doctors dont offer it, drug company related issue.

I am always bothered when people use pain relievers for migraines. If you keep a food chart, you can determine migraine's causes, USUALLY from foods. I found out by keeping a "food chart" (suggested by a TV station)that ONIONS GIVE ME MIGRAINE HEADACHES!
Once I found out, I have never had a migraine since, unless I accidentally eat an onion(s) in a restaurant. Several people have told me the same.
I sat next to someone at a restaurant who had a plate full of scallions. I asked her how she kept from having migraines; she reached in her purse and pulled out a box of migraine pills!!!
By keeping a food chart, I noticed migraines had nothing to do with "nerves" because I could have a PERFECT day, everything fine, then have a MIGRAINE. Now, I have NEVER had migraines for many, many years!

To anyone out there, beware of Celebrex. I used it for a short period of time and ended up with congestive heart failure. It was awful. I believe many doctors have stopped prescribing this.

my doctor put me on celebrex, it did not help. i started using ibuprofen 400 to 800mg and got great results. with food of course.
