I helped a friend of mine move into a new apartment yesterday. But before we loaded all the furniture in to his new pad, we had to do some heavy duty cleaning. I was ready to charge the dust bunnies with a vacuum cleaner when he admitted that he didn't even have one. Not even a small hand-held! I almost dragged him to the store to buy one right then and there, but we had a truck full of IKEA furniture waiting. So, purchasing a vacuum had to wait too. I decided to check out the top searched vacuums on AOL Search to, hopefully, motivate him into finally getting one. In the meantime, I rented one of those combined vacuum cleaner and shampooers to really get the place clean.
Dyson Vacuums came in at the top of our list, but they are also one of the most expensive. I have seen their newest vacuum that rolls on a ball for quick turns. It is so innovative but costs almost $500, which is far more expensive than the $98 Bissell I found while shopping on AOL Shopping. Still, Dysons are great for people who need some allergy relief because a lot of their models come equipped with HEPA filters, which catch a lot of the things floating around your house that cause allergy symptoms. The Dyson Vacuum DC17 has a lifetime filter built in.
There are a lot of different options to look for when searching for a vacuum. Most people want something light-weight with great sucking power. I personally think the best vacuums for this are canister vacuums. That way you don't have to fumble with changing vacuum bags.

You failed to mention the Sears brand Progressive upright vacuum cleaner on your list. It is listed number one on the Comsumer Report "best vacuum cleaner". It too includes the Hepa filter. I have had one for the past two years and highly recommend one. I had a Shark product before and would never recommend one of those. They are cheaply constructed and did not do the work.

I am floored that Electrolux isn't on this list! Doesn't anyone remember Electrolux?? They are still the world's best!! Sure, they are expensive but Electrolux also makes air cleaners & purifyers for hospitals. If you have allergies or asthma (and I do), the ONLY vacuum is Electrolux.

I work in a vacuum cleaner sales and service store. My father has worked in and the business for 20 years and now owns the business. In the world of vacuum cleaners, the absolute best home vacuum in a Panasonic Upright. They are lightweight, have great suction and rarely need servicing. They are also reasonably priced at arounc 200.00. From there, its a toss up between Orek an Hoover Wind Tunnel. I can tell you this, NO bagless Vacuum is worth your money. Bagless Vacuums clog more often causing dust to spill into the air. Not to mention the mess they make while emptying the dirt collection cup. I have owned 5 out of the 10 on your list. I wouldn't give you a nickel for the Dyson. What a waste of money and I agree the bagless vaccuums are worthless. I now own a Simplicity (made right here in the USA)and haven't had a problem with it. It cleans better than any other vaccuum I have owned.

I think Dyson is the worlds best, it actually makes vacuuming fun, the worst I have ever owned was ORECK, I have no idea how that guy can sell his crappy 1970's technology and people buy that crap. I had an ORECK it worked good for about a month then it was trash and customer service , forget it, letter writing a waste of time.NEVER EVER AGAIN. Buy a DYSON the first time and it will the last VAC you will ever own. Mr Dyson I salute you.

I got a Dyson last year for Christmas, and I absolutely love it!! We have two little dogs, and it has awesome suction, I also love the extension wand to get in the corners and gets the cobwebs off the ceilings! Worth every cent! I use it to sweep out my car also!

I have wood floors since I pulled up most of ou carpets . All the vacuums today on the shevels are big and bulky . I use a Emer Raffaello . It is made oin Italy not China or Mulaysia like most brands Real quaulity woth soft brushes for tile and wood

I was known among my friends of owning every make of vacume ever made. I can't say enough about the Dyson. I have the "ball" model. You can turn that machine with one finger. It picks up EVERYTHING. I've had them all...........DYSON wins with me.

I got a Dyson after Christmas last year, and I love it!!!! I have three boys, and two little dogs, and this vacuum gets down in the fibers and lifts out everything! I use it on my car also, best thing I have ever used on a vehicle! I also love the long wand, for hard to reach places, and in getting cobwebs from the ceiling also! The suction is so powerful! One of the best purches I have ever made!!!

My parents and myself own a Rainbow with the water container at the bottom and attachments for every floor and extension bars to reach 5 feet into the air.

What about the THERMAX? Twice as good and dependable as the Rainbow. No bags and cleans the air too! attachments that make sense, including a carpet "Steam Cleaner" that really works!

We have only hardwood floors, no carpet and the very best vacuum is the Sears Blue Magic. Small, light weight, and under $100. It does not work well on carpet, but on hardwood floors it is great. 3 dogs and 4 cats, it picks up all the fur.

We bought a Hoover Tempo online at Amazon.com for $60. It's very LIGHT WEIGHT and has great suction. The only problem is that the suction is so good that it grabs area rugs. I don't like the canister models. They have to be cleaned too often and you breath all the dust while enpting them. The filter in my old one had to be washed out often

I have had all types of vacuums because of my pets, pets, pets and my Virgo personality makes me want my house clean, clean, clean. KIRBY is the only vacuum that has consistently taken care of the pet hair. I will have no other--and since it never breaks down, I probably won't ever have to. I even bought it used and it is just great.

For the price,(a little over two hundred dollars) the Bissell Healthy Home is by far the best vacuum I have ever owned. I have breathing problems and the built in hepa filter works like an air cleaner. Yes, it is bagless, (so I empty it outside -- maybe the birds will use the fuzz to build a nest). Yes, it would be a mess to empty it inside, and yes the vacuum is a little top heavy. I am in my fifties and have used a lot of vacuums -- this is my favorite ever.

What you didnt mention is vacs havnt changed in almost 60 yrs, just differnt window dressing is all. I've worked on them all. If it has a bag it WILL pass dust, it has to to flow air. The hepa filters arent as good as the filters in Filterqueen Vacuum cleaners. They've been around since the 50's and will take a 1/2 micron smoke partical out of the air. they use them in nuke plants,their that good. So before you spend all that money on a dyson that's medicocre look up Filterqueen.
