Working for the Judge Is Not Fair

One of my friends in college used to make it a point to always watch 'Judge Judy.' Every day at 4 PM he would drop everything for the show. He is officially the only person I know who was an avid Judy fan. Don't get me wrong, I have watched plenty of The Judge in my day. But I feel like it is not the kind of show that you sit down and watch on purpose ... but somehow when it comes on, you can't stop watching.

The thing that makes the show remotely appealing (at least to me) is the fact that Judy is so mean to the defendants on the show. The thing is, I always thought that her sharp tongue was just an act. It turns out that in real life Judy may not be as nice as I thought that she was.

Two separate lawsuits have been filed against the show by former employees. Both claim that the environment on 'Judy' was toxic and that they were wrongfully fired from the show. One instance involved age discrimination and the other was racial discrimination. Wow -- for a show that is supposed to bring justice, isn't that almost an oxymoron?

Happy New Year!

It's a new year full of interesting searches. At the top of our list we see Kim Kardashian. Now Kim makes it into our top searches all the time, but this time it is for a different reason. Rumors hit yesterday that the voluptuous vixen is engaged to football player Reggie Bush. Even with all the buzz yesterday, Kardashian maintains that the rumors are not true.

Gene Simmons makes it on our list today. This is probably because 'The Apprentice' premieres tonight. And it is not Trump's regular season of challenges. This time the show's cast consists of celebrities. Gene Simmons is just one of the names among Trace Adkins, Carol Alt and Stephen Baldwin.

The beginning of the year also marks bowl season. The Mountaineers faced off against Oklahoma State last night and won the Fiesta Bowl. People are still searching for the Capital One Bowl since Michigan upset Florida. And the Orange Bowl is high up in our searches today. I will be watching tonight as Virginia Tech takes on Kansas. Go Hokies!

The Hunt for Cooper

The FBI is reopening a case from 1971. D.B. Cooper skyjacked a plane over 35 years ago and investigators are looking into who the skyjacker really is. During the skyjacking, Cooper demanded $200,000 and parachutes before the plane dropped him just outside of the Oregon border with the chutes that he was given.

The authorities assumed that Cooper would not have made it. He jumped into the wilderness with no supplies or preparation. One of the chutes also was a dummy that was sewn shut. So he may not have even survived the crash.

On Monday the FBI began posting pictures of what they believe Cooper would look like now. In the years since the case there have been over 800 suspects that authorities have considered to be Cooper. These have been ruled out when DNA from a tie left on the plane by the suspect was analyzed.

So who is D.B. Cooper and why does the FBI care now? It will be really interesting to see if they can find him now ...

Makeup is the Best

Yes, I fully admit it ... I am a makeup snob. I just can't help it -- I really love cosmetics. This whole snobbery issue started when I was in college. Before this time I would buy whatever makeup was at CVS and did not care about the brand. Revlon, Cover Girl, whatever... as long as it did the job.

Then everything changed. One of my college roommates revealed her makeup artillery. It consisted of luscious Mac brushes, smooth Smashbox eye shadows and Bobbi Brown bronzer that was to die for. And this was just the tip of the iceberg. I had no idea that makeup could be so fun!

So I started my own collection. Over the years I have become brand loyal to a few cosmetics companies. I love MAC eye shadow and their StudioFix line. Smashbox and Benefit are also great. Oh, and Chanel makes a seriously fab lip gloss.

There have to be other people out there who love makeup as much as I do. So I thought it would be fun to check out the brands people were looking for on AOL Search. MAC tops off our list and is followed by Mary Kay. I've heard mixed reviews on Bare Minerals but I have not tried it. I have never heard of E.L.F. Cosmetics but it looks like it could be fun and affordable!

What is your favorite makeup brand? Try searching for cosmetics on AOL Search or you can check out AOL Shopping to see what makeup bargains you can find.

Happy searching!

I Love a Good Sale

Before the holidays is the time that people shop and shop and shop. Now, this is all important leading up to the holidays, but I have found that you kind find the best deals afterwards. Everything goes on sale! This is when I do most of my personal shopping ;)

I'm not a great bargain shopper, but I love to find a good deal. It is just so rewarding! And you cannot get any buyer's remorse if you buy something on sale. (I have become a pro at justifying anything). So where can you find the best deals?

It is time to get prepared to see what sales people are searching for on AOL Search. I checked it out and the #1 item that came up is auto sales. Hm, I have been thinking about a new car. Naturally people are searching for after Christmas sales. People also want to get deals on DVDs, timeshares and computers.

Searching for Foreclosures

Hearing the word foreclosure can be scary, especially to recent homeowners like myself. This has been such a hot topic recently, it's somewhat disconcerting. With all of the buzz around the topic, you can't ignore the fact that foreclosures are on the rise.
When I was looking to buy my first home I actually searched for foreclosures in Virginia. I looked at a few bank-owned properties and let's just say they were not totally up to my standards. But I have heard that some people get deals on foreclosed properties so maybe it is a good idea to check them out.

With all of the foreclosures of late, I was interested to see where people were searching, which states were the most popular spots for foreclosure searches. Checking out the most searched foreclosure states on AOL Search, it seems that foreclosures in Florida were the hottest topic. And apparently people were searching for Florida churches in foreclosure (which I found strange). Other hot foreclosure states were Michigan, Louisiana and Ohio.

Want some more insight into the topic? Try searching for foreclosures on AOL Search or check out AOL Real Estate for more info on home purchasing.

Time For a Resolution

New Year's. Every year it is a time that people use to reflect upon the past year and plan for the next. It is also a time when people make New Year's resolutions. But how do you decide what you want to improve upon in your life? How do you choose the one area that is the most important?

I am not big on New Year's resolutions. Just because I have the theory that no one ever keeps them. If you really want to improve you life, you should just do it. If you do it on January 1st, it's too cliché. You are bound to fail!

But maybe this year should be different. Maybe I should think about making a New Year's resolution. As my first year in a long time, I want to start small and work from there. So, where to begin?

I decided to check out the New Years searches that people were doing on AOL Search. Maybe this would give me some idea about what resolution searches people were doing. From there, I would have to find some kind of resolution for myself! People are searching for everything from Christian New Year's resolutions to asking themselves what New Years resolutions really are. I did not know that they made New Years resolution cards!

She Gets It from Her Sister

Really? Our top search today is "Jamie Lynn Spears pregnant"? Please tell me that another Spears has not been given permission to procreate. Oh, but apparently she has. It was leaked that Jamie Lynn is in fact pregnant.

Jamie Lynn announced to 'OK! Magazine' that she and her boyfriend, Casey Alridge, will be having a baby. Spears is already 12 weeks along in her pregnancy. But she assures fans that it will not impact her show, 'Zoey 101.' Oh, good Jamie because that is what we were worried about. And isn't that show on Nickelodeon? I am sure that is the example that the network would love to set for its children viewers.

I don't know what is worse ... the fact that the Spears family is a total train wreck in general or the fact that the youngest member of the clan is now pregnant. Either way it does not help the sisters and their reputations. I don't know what else these formerly innocent Louisiana girls can do? But at least they keep it interesting!

Five Falcons Get Fined

So Michael Vick is hot again. I decided after his sentencing last week that I would not be writing about him anymore. The story is pretty much overplayed and I was done with it. But some of his teammates had to go and make another scene about the shamed quarterback and it was just too much to pass up.

The Falcons played the Bucs this Sunday but the big story is not that they lost (pretty tragically might I add). Nope, it is how Vick's teammates reacted to his punishment on the field this weekend.

Five players were fined for their actions after Sunday's game. DeAngelo Hall, Chris Houston, Roddy White and Alge Crumpler were each fined $10,000 for openly expressing their opinions on Vick's incarceration. Hall and Crumpler were both seen sporting eye patches before the game with the message "MV-7" on them. White also revealed into the game that he was wearing a "Free Michael Vick" tee shirt under his jersey.

On top of this, DeAngelo Hall ran onto the field with a poster of Vick which he attempted to post during the game. Maybe it is because they are both former Hokies, but it seems like Hall is the most upset about Vick's punishment.

I feel like their reaction was unwarranted. I mean he openly abused animals! A slap on the wrist was not going to make him learn. And let's be honest ... the league gave these guys a $10,000.00 fine. That is like fining me $1.00. It is NOTHING to them on their multi million dollar income. I guess that they will not learn their lesson either ....

Harding's Accomplice Dies

Tonya Harding. That is a name that I have not heard in a super long time. So when she came up in our top searches, I was immediately curious. Why would people be searching for Harding now? Could it have something to do with her dazzling wrestling career? Or maybe she was caught up in another scandal?

It turns out that all of my theories were wrong. Though I am sure that everyone was interested in Harding's wrestling career, this is not the only reason that people were searching for her. This weekend people began to think about the Harding case again when her accomplice in the crime died.

Tonya's old bodyguard, Brian Sean Griffith, died of natural causes in Oregon this weekend. He was originally known as Shawn Eckardt. But after serving 14 months in prison for his crimes against Nancy Kerrigan, Griffith decided to change his name and distance himself from the scandal. The exact cause of death will remain unknown until his doctor files for his death certificate.

Thirteen years later, Griffith had started a computer business and made attempts to put the past behind him. This was clearly cut short as he died at the young age of 40 this weekend. You can read more about this story from AOL Sports.

Move Dating Online

Dating can be incredibly exhausting. Trust me; I have learned this the hard way. First dates are like job interviews. You have to look your best. Then you have to be prepared with witty and charming responses to questions and armed with interesting topics of conversation. I mean, who can do that after a long day of work!?!

There has to be a way to make this whole dating thing easier. I have totally ruled out blind dates. It's way too much of a crapshoot. Then you have to explain to your mutual friend why you were not interested. Inevitably, someone gets hurt. But if you are not willing to be set up, where do you meet people? It's hard for busy professionals to take the time to find people to date.

I thought I would check out what online dating searches people were doing. Yes, the concept is kind of scary. Someone you meet could be leading a secret double life and have an entire family in another state! But I have also heard so many good stories about couples who have met online and ended up living happily ever after. You could also get to know the person before you have to meet them and not waste your time with people you don't really like. Now that is important!

Lots of people are searching for classified personals and online dating sites. I have heard a lot about dating services lately. It's almost like being set up by friends, but I think that they take more criteria into account. I would love to go speed dating (even though I have yet to get my single friends to agree to the outing), it would be an adventure if nothing else. You wont catch me in any dating chat rooms, but apparently tons of other people are going to them.

Have you tried online dating? What worked for you? You can also try searching for dating on AOL Search or check out AOL Personals ... maybe your match is waiting for you!

Making a Major Decision

Lots of exciting things happen when you are 18 and getting ready to head off to college. You are about to meet tons of new people and get your first taste of independence. You are finally going to live on your own ... even if that means sharing a 12' x 14' space with a roommate. And the best part is? You can stay out as late as you want to -- Even on a school night!

With all these exciting things going on, it can be easy to forget other factors that will impact your college career. Like, say choosing a major. I remember going off to college and not really having a clue what I wanted to do. Who can be absolutely sure of the best use of their skill set at the tender age of 18?

I entered my freshman year with a business undecided major with the intention of choosing the details later. The more business classes I took, I realized that I would be best suited for marketing major. But this decision did not come easily. After an internal debate between marketing, communications and the other business majors at my school, I finally made my choice.

It turned out that I made the right decision, but it certainly was not an easy choice. I thought it would be interesting to see what the most searched for college majors were on AOL Search. If I had such a hard time making decisions others have to be in the same boat.

A major in government came up at the top of the list. I thought it was very interesting that people were searching for colleges with dance majors next. There are a lot of music focused programs that people are searching for from songwriting majors to jazz music and commercial music majors. I also think that a having a broadcasting major could be very fun!

Did your major make out list? Try searching for college majors on AOL Search to see what is out there.

Travel Last Minute

So you want to go on a trip, but you don't know where. I face this problem all of the time. On top of it all, I am a terrible decision maker. I can never decide where to go and by the time I am ready to actually book a trip the price of vacations has skyrocketed.

Knowing that this is how I am when it comes to travel, I have become an excellent searcher. If you are not good at planning ahead, looking for deals becomes your next best option. With the holidays well under way I thought it would be a good idea to see what last minute travel items people are looking for on AOL Search. Who knows ... maybe I will get inspired to take a trip myself?

Topping off the list is last minute cruises. This kind of surprises me ... Who knew people were taking so many cruises in the winter? Next we see searches for last minute flights which I expected. A great idea is to search for last minute car rentals -- they can be pricey! Or what about the last minute all-inclusive Caribbean trip? It would be nice to get out of the cold weather!

Another Hollywood Pregnancy

We are always hearing about Hollywood starlets getting pregnant. Nicole Richie, Christina Aguilera and JLo are all currently expecting. And now there is another name to add to the list: Jessica Alba.

The 'Fantastic Four' star announced this week that she is in fact preggerz. Alba and her boyfriend, Cash Warren, will be having a baby in 2008. The couple has been dating on and off since 2004 when the met on the 'Fantastic Four' set. Now it looks like things are pretty serious!

Alba has established herself as a sex symbol in Hollywood, so I wonder if this pregnancy will impact her career. She just finished filming the upcoming film, 'The Love Guru' and is set to tape the 'Sin City' sequel. Hm, I don't think that he role in that movie calls for a baby bump. But so many starlets have remained in the Hollywood hotspot post-pregnancy, I am sure Alba will be just fine.

Trebek Has a Heart Attack

Call me a total nerd, but 'Jeopardy' is one of my favorite shows. I did not really start to watch the show until one of my college roommates got me into it. Almost every night we would make dinner and wait for Alex Trebek to quiz our general knowledge. OK, so maybe we were not always good at getting all the answers correct (I am much better at 'Wheel of Fortune') but it was funny to see what we would all guess.

My affinity for the show remains today so I was kind of stressed this morning when I heard about Alex Trebek on the radio. Yesterday Trebek suffered a heart minor heart attack and was hospitalized after the event. He is being monitored at Cedars-Sinai hospital in L.A. and is recovering fine. The 67-year-old host is planning to return to the show.

Phew, that is a relief! I cannot imagine 'Jeopardy' without Trebek. He has been hosting the show since 1984 ... that is almost as long as I have been alive! That's a crazy long tenure. I wish Alex the best in recovery and we hope to see him back soon.
