Some Accidental Celebs in '07

If you would have said the name Kim Kardashian to me a year ago, I don't think that I would have known who you were talking about. Shyamali Malakar? That name would not have rung a bell. And I would have given you a blank stare with the mention of the name Chris Crocker. But all of these names emerged in 2007 to be ones everybody recognizes.

Since 2007 was a year that made so many accidental celebs appeared on AOL Search, I thought it would be interesting to make a list of all of these names. It is always fun to recap and reminisce as the year ends.

OK, Kardashian is not as obscure as some of the people who made our list, but 2007 was definitely her break out year. The bootylicious socialite made headlines for everything from dating Reggie Bush to posing for 'Playboy.' Eventually all of this publicity landed her a reality TV gig with 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians.' '07 propelled Kim from obscure rich girl into a family name.

We also see both of the Malakars make the top ten list this year. It is really interesting to me that with all the Sanjaya fever, his sister still got more searches than he did. Maybe it was the rumor of her naughty online pics? Both were cut from 'Idol' but they still stole a piece of our hearts.

Lots of viral video stars made our list. Remember Crazy Chris Crocker asking us to "Leave Britney Alone"? There was also Obama Girl and her tribute to Barack. I honestly did not understand the whole Chocolate Rain craze, but he also makes our top ten.

Be sure to check out all of our top searches on the Year End Hot Searches site.

2007 --The Year of Gossip

Everyone loves to gossip. I think that it is just part of human nature. Now gossiping can get you into trouble if you do it about your friends, family or co-workers. But you can always talk about celebrities without any consequences. They are completely free game!

2007 was a great year for celebrity gossip. People wanted info on tons of the juicy topics. Anything from Britney and her latest antics to Anna Nicole's baby daddy to Antonella and the scantily clad pics were all hot topics this year. But those do not even scratch the surface! There were so many stories to keep up with.

But when you want all the info, where do you go? To the gossip blogs, that's where. I like to think that I am pretty informed when it comes to celebrity gossip, so I have to keep a pretty rigorous schedule of blogs for daily reading. And since 2007 was such a big year for celebrity gossip, I decided to check out the top gossip blogs that people were looking for on AOL Search this year.

Topping off the gossip blog list is TMZ which is also on the top of my daily reading list. Next we see followed by Perez Hilton and Dlisted. The Superficial and Pink is the New Blog are also quite informative. I am kind of surprised Gossip Girls and What Would Tyler Durden Do did not make the list. Maybe next year!

What is your favorite gossip blog?

Be sure to check out all of the Year End Hot Searches lists from AOL Search.

Is Cowell a Cheater?

It looks like Simon Cowell may be in trouble if our top searches are any indicator of what people are talking about today. A photo has surfaced from a paparazzo which makes it look like Cowell and Danni Minogue are holding hands. Wait, isn't he dating Terri Seymour? Then why is he out some other woman's hand?

Both Minogue and Cowell have denied the public display and stated that it was just the angle of the camera. The two are very friendly and have quite a flirty relationship so one could see how their interactions could get misconstrued. But according to reports, the pair is just friends.

It seems like the paparazzi is wrong this time ... Hopefully that is how Terri sees the situation as well ;)

One Hot Weekend

This was all over the place in the world of search. Looking at the top searches from AOL Search this weekend, they cover many different topics. Searches are up on every topic from celebrities to a controversial drug that is on the market.

In the celeb realm, we see searches for Kim Kardashian. Now is it because she was jetsetting around Cabo all week or was it due to her recent attendance at Life's Breakthrough of the Year awards? There is also more drama surrounding Michael Vick as the disgraced Falcons QB was sentenced today for his crimes. He will serve 23 months in prison for his dogfighting ring ... which I am not sure is entirely enough. And we cannot forget about Paris. Is she having a fling with her ex, Stavros?

The most interesting search that came up this weekend was for Prometa. The drug has come up as a hot topic for debate as people begin to question its effectiveness. Prometa is supposed to cure addiction for many things from alcohol to cocaine to methamphetamines. Sounds great, right? There is one catch: It is not approved by the FDA.

So why is this unapproved drug getting all this recognition and promotion? Marketers have found a loophole. The drug is a combination of three FDA approved drugs that have absolutely nothing to do with curbing addiction. But that apparently does not matter. Since the ingredients in the drug combo are approved, it is perfectly legitimate to prescribe it. This is called off-the-label use.

It is kind of crazy to me that the FDA allows this. People are paying tons of money to get treatment and there is no clinical proof that these actually work in combination. Patients who used Prometa have given testimonials to the success of the drug, but that is one of the few things backing it. It will be interesting to see if people continue to use this drug.

ZigaZig Ah!

Between Sean Taylor and the Omaha mall shootings, this has been kind of a sad week in search. Since I have focused on these melancholy events, I wanted to end the week on an upbeat note. That is why I am choosing Victoria Beckham as my favorite topic from the hot searches this week.

Yes, Posh comes up in our top searches on a regular basis. But this week it is for a mayyyyyjahhh reason. She is back on tour with the Spice Girls. I'm going to be honest; when I first heard that the Spice Girls were going to go back on tour I was kind of skeptical. I mean, who would not be? A bunch of 30-year-old mothers running around a stage, scantily clad is not my idea of a rockin' good time.

It turns out that my skepticism was wrong. The Spice Girls reunion tour launched this week and it is getting decent reviews. And get this ... they are actually singing live! This is probably backlash from their recent lip syncing efforts at a Victoria's Secret show. Good job, girls!

You know, I was pretty into the Spice Girls in the mid-nineties and did not get a chance to see them in concert then, so maybe I should go now? OK, I don't know if I could convince anyone to go with me, but it would be interesting to see them live!

So if anyone needs me this weekend, I will be looking for my throwback 'Spice World' CD so that I can reminisce about the good old days with Posh, Baby, Scary and Ginger. You can also check out a video of their recent performance on TMZ.

Happy searching! Zigahzig ah ;)

Cruising Through Winter

I have never been on a cruise. No, it's not because I lived a deprived life and do not get to travel. My friends and I have entertained the possibility of a cruise many times and always decide against it. My theory on cruises is that it is kind of a risky venture. You are on a boat with the same people the whole time. What if you end up on a boat with no other fun passengers? Or worse, what if you end up on a boat that is not nice? You are stuck on it for days with no other options.

After talking with many people that have been on cruises and really enjoyed themselves, I am starting to think that maybe my cruise fears are unwarranted. Really going on a cruise should be fun and I should just give it a chance. And what would be a better time than the winter to get away for some sun and relaxation?

My anti-cruise mentality for the past few years has made it so I do not know a lot about cruises. It's time for some research! I checked out what cruise destinations people were looking for on AOL Search. Naturally Caribbean cruises topped off the list followed by Alaska cruises and Hawaii cruises. I would definitely take a cruise to Bermuda ... or even better, a European cruise. Time to start booking!

Have you been on a cruise? If so, where was your favorite destination? For more information you can look for travel deals on AOL Travel or try searching for cruises on AOL Search.

Tragedy in the Mall

Imagine you are going to the mall to do some casual shopping on a Wednesday afternoon. You are focused on getting ready for the holidays and trying to beat the rush. It's an activity that most ofus do on a regular basis this time of year, right? It never occurs to us that there is potential danger involved in this.

Well this festive mindset is probably the same one that the employees and shoppers had at the Von Maur store just outside of Omaha, Nebraska yesterday. But noone expected Robert A. Hawkins to show up. His presence at the Westroads Mall yesterday would change the lives of the people there forever.

Hawkins, 19, opened fire in the department store at about 2 PM yesterday. In his shooting spree, he killed eight others before taking his own life. Reports from the witnesses of the event describe utter chaos in the store that day. Many of the people killed were actually employees of the store. Hawkins left a suicide note which said that he wanted to be famous. I don't think that this was the manner in which to achieve this.

This is the fourth mall shooting this year. And if we look at events like the Virginia Tech massacre and this current Sean Taylor case, it is really scary to look at all the violence in America today. Adding to that is the cases of violence that aren't on a large scale or involve someone famous to put them in the news. It is almost as if we are becoming immune to it, which is very sad to me.

NFL Star Laid to Rest

When I went to the Redskins game this past Sunday I was not quite sure what to expect from the fans. Before kickoff, the mood at FedEx Field was completely solemn as the 'Skins prepared to take the field for the first time without safety, Sean Taylor. There was a pre-game tribute at the stadium to honor the falle athlete. By the end of the video montage there was not a dry eye around me.

Even though he was not on the field, Taylor was remembered the entire game. The staff at FedEx handed out towels with the #21 on them and it was amazing to watch people wave them throughout the game. It honestly gave me chills. On the first defensive play of the game, the Redskins started with only 10 men in order to honor the absence of their 11th player.

Thousands came out to pay their respects to Sean Taylor at a funeral held this Monday at FIU. Fans cheered and mourned the loss of the star player. Taylor was remembered by everyone from family members to coach, Joe Gibbs at the service. Even Reverend Jessie Jackson was in attendance to escort Taylor's family.

I am honestly shocked that this is the first day that we have seen the name Sean Taylor in our daily hot searches. Being from the D.C. area, I have seen the fan reactions and followed the case carefully since Taylor was initially shot. One thing I can say about Redskins fans is that they are a unique and loyal breed of people. Listening to reactions on the radio and actually attending the game this week have been very sobering experiences.

The whole situation is completely unbelievable. The fact that he was only 24 and was killed in this terrible act of violence is horrific. One of the attackers was only 17-years-old ... a CHILD was involved in this man's death! Hopefully this event will make people examine how out of control violence in the U.S. really is.

Was Miss Puerto Rico Sabotaged?

Miss Puerto Rico has made an appearance in our top searches for the past week so I figured it was probably time to address the situation. Last week Ingrid Marie Rivera participated in the Miss Puerto Rico Universe contest and claimed that she had been attacked prior to the competition. According to the pageant princess, she was sprayed with pepper spray as an act of sabotage prior to the competition.

Rivera said that the spray that was put on her gown and in her makeup. This caused her to break out in hives the day of the pageant and forced her to constantly ice her body between segments to reduce swelling. Even with all of that drama, Rivera came up on top at the end of the competition and was crowned Miss Puerto Rico.

Since her win, people have been praising her for her brave actions in the aftermath of sabotage. But now people are questioning the beauty queen. Police looked for traces of the alleged chemical on her dress and did not find anything. Wait, does this mean that that Puerto Rican princess told a lie?

If she is lying, Rivera could face felony charges for providing false information to the police. Police are now looking into if anyone has given false statements. Rivera has not actually released a statement to the cops, but there is clearly a disconnect somewhere. Someone is lying and I cannot wait to find out what the real story is.

Tila Tells Us Lies!

One lazy Saturday a few weekends ago I was sitting around channel surfing with some friends. My favorite channel to watch on a Saturday is MTV (no one wants to think after a long work week!), so naturally I navigated in that direction. It all started with one episode of 'A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila' and turned into a Tila-marathon. We did not want to watch, but for some reason couldn't turn the channel. By the end of the second episode it was over. We had to know who Tila would choose.

This Tilathon spurred some interesting conversation. I know the concept is the bi-sexual bachelorette has men and women compete for her affection. But who would she choose? A man or a woman? Honestly, we just weren't buying it. I felt like Tila was playing a part the whole time. It's a really interesting twist, but what better way to get famous than to have this reality TV show? By episode three we had decided that she was not bisexual. It was one or the other; we just were not sure which.

Well it turns out that we were right. This week a source leaked to the 'New York Times' that Tila is actually straight. I knew it! According to the source, "Tila has and has had a boyfriend for over a year, and she's not really bi. She's made out with some girls in her past, as all girls have, but she is not bi at all." OK whoa, I don't know about ALL girls ... but it does make sense that she is straight. She did it all for publicity!

So Just because I think it is entertaining (and I love to be right), I choose Tila Tequila as my favorite search term for this week.

Have a fabulous weekend and happy searching!

Internet Star's Body Found

OK, you know how some news stories you hear about are just plain creepy? The kind that give you chills and you realize people everywhere are doing much crazier things than you thought possible. The other day I was casually driving to work when I heard one of those stories. It was the case of Emily Sander.

Thanksgiving was a big day in the Sander household. The 18-year-old community college student broke the news to her parents that she was leading a double life as a porn star. Apparently their little girl had been posing for years and now that she was officially an adult she felt it was time to tell her parents. As shocking as this news was, things were about to get way worse for the family.

On the evening of November 23rd, Sander was seen leaving a bar in El Dorado, Kansas with Isreal Mireles, 24. When the girl was reported missing, police went to Mireles' motel room where they found everything covered in blood. After tracking down evidence, which included Mireles' abandoned rental car, they found Emily's body on the side of the road. Police are currently looking for Isreal Mireles and his 16-year-old pregnant girlfriend who was reportedly with him at the time.

What I really do not get at all is the motive for this murder. Now reports are saying that it has nothing to do with Emily's online career and if anything, the discovery of her website just got in the way of solving the case. But if this guy already had a 16-year-old pregnant girlfriend (which is creepy yet again) what in the world could they have wanted with Sander? What happened to the girl is really quite sad and I hope that they find them soon.

Rumors Can Get Ugly

Wow, lots of good gossip in our top searches today ... I don't even know where to begin! Topping off our list is the ever-classy Kim Kardashian. And this time she did not even have to take off her clothes to make a buzz! Apparently Kim was at JFK airport when she stopped to sign some autographs. During her autograph signing high, over $50,000 of Kim's stuff was taken from her bags. People are now questioning if she was really robbed or if it was a publicity stunt.

Hulk Hogan also makes it into our top list today. I almost feel bad for the Hogans because it seems like things have gone completely downhill for them since their reality TV show peak. First there is Nick and his accident. Then there are rumors that Hulk and Linda have filed for divorce. Now Hulk is being accused of buying his underage son beer the day of his crash! The only one that things seem to be okay for in this family is Brooke.

And finally I have to address this Britney situation. Last week I hear she is trying to adopt Chinese twins. Yesterday I heard some reports that she is pregnant again. Really, Britney?!? You can barely take care of yourself let alone the two children that you already have. Please, let's make this woman responsible for additional young lives. Brit has denied the pregnancy rumors and I hope that she is telling the truth.

Have you heard any other good celebrity gossip lately? Let me know what you think about Kim, Britney and Hulk.

Choosing a College ... Harder Than it Looks

Choosing a college can be so difficult. In high school you work so hard to make the grades, join all the clubs you can and take on leadership positions. Then it all comes down to the fateful decision of an admissions board. Will all your hard work pay off or will you be stuck at your "safety school"?

I remember applying for schools. It's such a stressful time! And what did I know about deciding my major and my entire future at the age of 18? That is kind of young to know what you may want to do with your life. My limited life experience as head cheerleader and SCA Secretary could never prepare me to make a decision like that.

So I did my research ... lots of research. I learned about the different universities out there and what they had to offer. But how was I supposed to know if it was going to be a good fit for me? Did I want a big school or a small school? Did I want to go in-state or out-of-state? And don't even get me started on what programs different schools offered. That was an entirely different story.

As an official adult now, I am happy to say that my research paid off and I definitely made the right decision (go Hokies!). But I wanted to see what colleges and universities people were looking into these days. No, not the most prestigious or most expensive universities ... just the ones that people are showing interest in. It has always been a really interesting topic to me.

We see searches for campuses that span the country from University of Michigan to University of Arizona. It seems like a lot of the top searched universities have strong football programs with Boston College, Virginia Tech and Ohio State all making the list. I guess that makes sense with the BCS games coming up.

Did your alma mater make the list? What do you think of our top schools? If you are doing campus research try searching for universities on AOL Search. Or check out what universities are in your state on AOL Yellow Pages.

Making a Mini Comeback?

The minivan, It's almost like a four letter word to me. I think it has something to do with the fact that I am a child of the '80s. This was also the time that the minivan reached its peak. It seemed like all of my friends' parents were sporting the minivan. But why? Was it utilitarian, in order to transport your fleet of children? I don't think that people had more children in the '80s than they do now, but maybe I am wrong.

By the time that I reached the ripe old age of 12, I vowed that I would never own a minivan. I had decided that it just wasn't my style. I remember telling a friend in middle school that if she ever saw me with a minivan, she had permission to hit me. Now this was probably an overreaction, but what isn't when you are 12?

It seemed that the minivan went away for a while in the late '90s. In my expert opinion, I think that North America went on minivan overload and needed to take a break. But it kind of seems now that the minivan is making a comeback. I see them on the road much more often. They also aren't looking as bad as they did in the '80s (as thankfully most things aren't -- this includes my 1989 perm and teased bangs).

With my new minivan comeback theory I wanted some way to back myself up. I decided to check out what minivans people were looking for on AOL Search. There have to be people looking for additional info on vans that they plan to purchase. The Dodge Caravan tops off our list. We also see searches for the Toyota Sienna and Kia Sedona. I have also decided that if I were to choose a minivan from the list it would be the Uplander or the Nissan Quest. They almost look like SUVs!

What do you think? Could they be making a comeback? Try searching for minivans on AOL Search – they don't look that bad. Or you can check out AOL Autos for more minivan information.

Searching for Health

There are so many health topics out there that are scary. I am a little OCD when it comes to health related topics, so I am constantly doing research on them. Germs are everywhere and you never know what you can get! Since I am still pretty young I am worried that this complex may just get worse with age.

There are a lot of health topics that people have to worry about as they get older. Since I am a woman, I did a little research on the health topics that impact women over the age of 60. As a disclaimer, these topics do not only affect women and some can happen at any age. But I thought it would be good to know a little more about these topics since they do usually happen with advanced age.

But what are mature women searching for? What ailments do these women worry about? I decided to check out what people were searching for on AOL Search to help narrow down my research. Diabetes topped off the lists followed by arthritis and menopause. I had never even heard of macular degeneration until I read about it today, but I hope to never have to deal with it.
