Iceland is a Hot Spot

So Iceland showed up in our top searches today. Now why is anyone searching for Iceland? You never really hear anyone talk about it. All I know is that it is cold and really far north. Well it turns out that Iceland is much more of a hot spot than I thought. In fact, it has been rated the best place to live according to a recent survey.

An annual UN report came out recently that announced that Iceland had finally taken the top spot on the list from Norway after six years. The U.S. fell out of 8th place all the way to 12th from the 2006 list. The worst place to live? Sierra Leone in sub-Sahara Africa.

The criterion used in the report includes life expectancy and GDP. Seventeen countries were omitted due to a lack of data. These included Iraq and Afghanistan.

Baby Grace Gets a Name

I was really surprised when Sean Taylor did not make it into our top searches today. Maybe it was the surprise of his untimely death but I really thought that people would be searching for him. There are some other interesting topics that did make our list. Trent Lott tops things off as he announced that he is stepping down from the Senate. And people are searching for 'Dancing With the Stars' since it is time to narrow down the contestants and pick a winner.

One of the most interesting things in our top searches today is Baby Grace. If you remember, the body of an unidentified child washed ashore in Galveston, Texas on October 29th. The town rallied to identify the little girl and find out who her parents were. Things have gone without resolution since the girl was discovered until this week when an arrest was made in the case.

19-year-old Kimberly Ann Trenor was arrested along with her husband, Royce Clyde Zeigler in conjunction with the disappearance of Baby Grace. The child has been identified as Riley Ann Sawyers who was reported missing by her grandmother earlier this month.

In the affidavit for their arrests, Trenor describes the day that the girl died. The couple beat her with leather belts and held her head under the sink. They then went to the local Wal-Mart and purchased supplies to dispose of her body. These included the plastic container that the girl was found in. After stuffing the girl into the container, they tossed her into the Galveston Causeway.

The original tip to the identity of Baby Grace came from her grandma, Sheryl Sawyers. Both she and the child's father are very upset about this discovery. I am really curious to see what the motive that the mother could possibly come up with for this is. It's really hard to imagine a crime so heinous committed by anyone, especially a parent. I guess we will see what happens, but I definitely think that the charges have to be upgraded from "injury to a child." She was not injured, she is dead. How a parent could do that is beyond me.

Getting 'Desperate' for a Plot

Every Sunday night I face a huge dilemma. Do I watch Sunday Night football or 'Desperate Housewives'? OK, 'Desperate' pretty much wins every week unless I am not at home and able to control what is on the TV. But recently it seems that 'Desperate Housewives' is getting a little out of control.

Some of the plots are just becoming too much for me. In last night's episode, we saw that Victor was not really dead. The fact that he was still living is no surprise to me but it is the ridiculousness of the show is becoming predictable. Of course he is not dead and of course he remembers what happened on his boat ... I could have written that story line.

And Mike has a drug addiction. Again, no shock value there. Of course they would take one of the nice guys on the show and make him bad. I am kind of curious about the new woman who is lurking around the neighborhood and threatening the new doctor. I am sure that there will be some kind of crazy explanation for her as well.

So I am not saying that I am anti 'Desperate Housewives.' But I do think that the show is getting wildly unrealistic and I am unsure as to how much I can take. But maybe that is just my opinion?

Reality TV Junkie

OK, I fully admit it: I am a reality TV junkie. No, I am not embarrassed by it ... I love reality TV. Wow, it almost feels good to say it out loud. Reality TV has really evolved over the years. Remember when it was just 'The Real World'? Now there are just so many kinds of reality TV shows out there. Love, survival, home improvement -- you name it and there is probably a show out there about the topic.

My favorite genres of reality TV are definitely love and fashion. As an avid 'Bachelor' fan for years I still watched this entire season even though I was mad at the end when he did not choose anyone. I still don't want to talk about it. My all time favorite reality TV show is definitely 'Project Runway.' The combo of the fun challenges and drama with the contestants definitely makes for good programming. I am also a huge Tim Gunn fan which is an added bonus. Have you watched his new show, 'Tim Gunn's Guide to Style'? It's like 'What Not to Wear' with a Tim Gunn twist. I highly recommend it.

I thought that it would be interesting to see what reality TV shows people were searching for on AOL Search. It seems that people agree with my 'Project Runway' and 'Bachelor' love but those did not beat out 'Dancing With the Stars' as the #1 show. I am not into survival shows so I do not watch 'The Amazing Race' or 'Survivor' but I know a ton of people that love both shows. It was also no shocker that 'The Hills' (another fave of mine) made the list. I'm also a secret 'I Love New York' fan so it is fun that it is in our top ten.

What is your favorite reality TV Show? Go to AOL TV to learn more about it or try searching for reality TV shows on AOL Search.

In Charge of the Road

My whole life I have driven little sedans. A Honda Accord, a Jetta ... and we will not even get into the whole Dodge Neon stage during college. Sometimes when I am driving I get car-envy of the larger cars on the road. I have been thinking about getting a new car recently so maybe it is time to upgrade to a larger vehicle.

Now when I say a larger vehicle, I mean a really big one. Not a mid-sized SUV but a huge one. I know this may sound strange but the larger the vehicle, the better I am at driving it. This summer I drove a U-Haul and was more in control of that than I am my Jetta. I think it is a power thing, but a large vehicle makes you feel in charge on the road.

Another reason I would like a big SUV is the ability to move things. Lately I have been trying to move boxes and furniture and I just cannot fit a lot in my car. But if I had a really, really big SUV I would be able to move whatever I wanted whenever I wanted to.

In my quest for a new large SUV I wanted to see what large vehicles people were searching for on AOL Search. There is not better way to start my research than to see what the most popular ones are. I have always really like the Range Rover, which came in at #1, followed by the Escalade and the Navigator. I also think that it would be kind of fun to drive a Hummer H2. The Yukon and the suburban are not really my style, but the Jeep Commander is kind of cute.

Do you drive a large SUV? What is your favorite kind? Try searching for large SUVs on AOL Search to get some ideas. Or you can always check out AOL Autos for more info.

Owning a Franchise

One of my friends is always talking about opening her own franchise with her brothers. First it was going to be a Five Guys franchise and now they want to open up a Tropical Smoothie Café franchise. Every time she brought it up, I thought that she was crazy. After graduating from college it never occurred to me to take this business path. I always just assumed that I would go work for someone else.

Now that I think about it, running a franchise may not be such a bad option. You could be your own boss! Think about making daily strategic business decisions. That would be fun and you would be totally in control of the business. The only issue I can see is getting together the capital to buy one ... that may get a little pricey.

Just out of curiosity I thought I would see what franchise opportunities people were looking for on AOL Search. I was a little surprised to see a Dollar Store franchise as #1 that just seems like it would be a chaotic thing to manage. I would also not want to own a Denny's franchise. But a Curves franchise could be fun or what about a KaBloom Flowers franchise?

Do you own a franchise? Which do you think would be the most profitable? Try searching for franchises on AOL Search or check out AOL Money for investment tips.

Another Church Scandal

Earl Paulk ... when the name came up in today's hot searches I had no idea who people were searching for. But after a little research of my own, I found out that the name is the center of another church-involved sex scandal. Paulk is the leader of a church in Decatur, GA but he has not always been quite the biblical role model.

A few weeks ago a paternity test confirmed that 34-year-old D.E. Paulk was not the nephew of Earl Paulk, but he was actually his son. It turns out that 34 years ago Earl had an affair with his brother's wife and fathered her child. D.E. was unaware that Earl was his father until this time.

But why now? Why are they looking into this 80-year-old man's infidelities years later? Well it turns out that this is not the only time that Earl's faithfulness to his wife has been questioned. Earl, his brother and the church are being sued by, Mona Brewer, who used was employed by the church for some time. She claims that Earl pressured her into an affair that lasted almost 15 years under the pretense that it was the only avenue for her salvation.

In a 2006 deposition Earl testified that he had not had extramarital affairs. He could be charged with perjury for this claim. D.E. Paulk is now the head pastor of the church and is still shocked by the discovery that he has a different father than he thought. ow that would be some interesting news ...

All Things Football

Football, football, football ... it seems that is the only thing that people are searching for over the weekend. Well, that and the requisite Lilo, Britney and Paris searches that people are always looking for. I mean, what could be more important than Nicole Richie's baby shower or Paris Hilton and her latest tape scandal? Apparently it is the BCS polls.

Things have been pretty unpredictable in the college football polls this season and this week was no different. Kansas moved up to clinch the #2 spot after Oregon lost to Arizona State in a shocking upset Thursday evening. LSU is holding on to #1 spot ... but who knows what will happen in the last few weeks of the season.

Another upset this weekend came when Oklahoma lost to Texas Tech knocking them all the way down to #10. Ohio State has also crept back up to the #5 spot and is pretty much guaranteed a spot in the Rose Bowl this season. And the Hokies beat Miami as expected and are in the #8 spot this week. Now they just have to beat Virginia this week to clinch a spot in the ACC Championship 

On the NFL side of things, people are searching for the New York Giants who beat the Lions 16-10 this Sunday. People are also searching for Packer updates after they defeated the North Carolina Panthers. And in a rival showdown yesterday the Redskins faced off against the Cowboys. They put up a good fight but in the end Romo and his team beat the 'Skins.

Eight Crazy Nights

Hanukkah. I do not know a ton about the holiday and thought it may be a good idea to learn more. But the first task I had to tackle was learning how to spell it? Is it Chanukkah? Or Hannukkah? Or even Hanukah? It seems that the most popular way that people are spelling it online is Hanukkah. OK, question #1 answered.

What else have I learned about Hanukkah? It is an eight day celebration of light that falls in the month of Kislev of the Hebrew calendar. This year the first day of Hanukkah is on December 5th. That must mean that people are starting to get ready!

I thought it would be good insight into the holiday to see what kind of Hanukkah searches that people were looking for on AOL Search. The number one search is for a Hanukkah centerpiece. People are also looking for Hanukkah gifts and Hanukkah plays. I am not really sure what a Hanukkah inflatable would entail, but it makes our top ten list.

Pre-Holiday Makeover Time

I am a huge fan of changing my look. It can range from a new hair color to different makeup to a manicure and pedicure. Things that stay the same all the time are just so boring! I have friends who have not changed their hairstyle in years. How is that even possible? Getting a makeover and changing your look is one of the most fun aspects of being a woman!

Don't get me wrong, men can change their look just as easily as women. It just seems that a lot of the procedures out there are targeted to women. I know plenty of men who go tanning, get their eyebrows waxed and even get pedicures!

When the seasons change I always try to vary my look a little bit. I already darkened my hair, but I want to do something more. I was curious to see what kind of makeover procedures people were looking into. Maybe there is something fun out there that I can get done!

It seems like the makeover searches run the gamut. I am a huge fan of teeth whitening and I really love to get facials. It seems that people are searching for more permanent procedures such as a breast augmentation or botox. I think for this season I will just stick with things that you can have done at the spa ;)

What is your favorite makeover procedure to have done? Try searching for makeovers on AOL Search. Or you can also check out AOL Style and get fashion and beauty tips.

Fight the Holiday Bulge

The holidays are a time where people tend to put on the pudge. Between turkey and stuffing and pies and wine, it is so hard to turn them down! My theory is that you should exercise self control with the only exception being the day of a holiday. Then you have a 24 hour pass to eat whatever you want. After that, it ends.

My theory may not be the best way to approach the excess holiday pounds, so I had better think of another solution. For the past couple of weeks I have been trying to exercise more and get into a routine. I have found that working out gives me the "me time" that I need every day. You are totally alone with all of your thoughts.

This time of year seems like it is the time when going to the gym falls off people's radar. But since I am in a motivated state, I thought I would look into gym memberships. My gym is local and with upcoming holiday travel I need to join a gym with many locations.

I assumed that the big gyms were the ones that people would be seeking out, so I decided to check out what people were searching for on AOL Search. I used to belong to a Gold's Gym and I really liked it there. I also have friends that belong to Lifetime Fitness and really love it there. Oh, or 24 Hour Fitness could be convenient ... you can work out whenever you want!

Trying to Have a Tropical Holiday

Every year I go to western Pennsylvania for the holidays. Don't get me wrong, I love to see my family and always have a good time. But if you have ever been to the mountains of Pennsylvania in November and December, it is pretty cold. Sometimes I really envy those people who take a family vacation instead. Think about it, you get to see your family and you get to tan in the middle of winter. Now that is my kind of holiday.

I don't know if I can convince my family to take our holiday festivities elsewhere. It just seems like it is a little untraditional for them. Since it is already mid-November it is probably not going to happen this year ... but maybe I can bring up a trip for next year and get the idea in their heads.

But where do people go for winter vacations? I am definitely thinking somewhere warm! I decided to see what kinds of vacations people were looking for on AOL Search so that I could have some ideas for the fam. I am not really into all-inclusive vacations and my family probably would not want to spend Christmas in Las Vegas. But I would love to go to Mexico or maybe we could take a cruise vacation?

A Low Key Wedding for Pompeo

Ellen Pompeo showed up in our top searches today and it was not because of her role on 'Grey's Anatomy.' It is actually about her personal life. Pompeo tied the knot with her fiancée, Chris Ivery and it is causing quite a buzz. Well, there was actually no buzz prior to the nuptials so I guess it only makes sense that people are talking about it now.

Pompeo made it clear throughout her entire engagement that she did not want a big ceremony. Super low key is exactly how the couple kept in when they married in New York's City hall. The ceremony was short and sweet and conducted by a city clerk. Their witness was Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Pompeo has been engaged to Ivery, a record producer, for a year now. The two were friends for months prior to beginning their romantic relationship. Ivery proposed on Ellen's 37th birthday. The ring was a 3.5 carat emerald cut Tacori diamond in a platinum setting. I guess you do not need a big wedding ceremony when you get a ring like that ;)

Dr. Adams = Shady

This whole Kanye West's mother debacle gets stranger every day. The reports at first implied that complications came up during surgery. Then we find out that it was secretly a cosmetic procedure and not a necessary operation. Then it turns out that Donda West was actually discharged and at home when the complications arose and had the time to call 911 herself before she died. And now Oprah is somehow involved??

It turns out that the doctor that performed the surgery on Donda West made our list of Hot Searches today. Dr. Jan Adams is the name that everyone is blaming for the death of Kanye's mom. And who are they blaming for Donda knowing about Dr. Adams? Oprah Winfrey. Apparently Winfrey had Adams as a guest on her show as an expert. Adams also has a show on The Discovery Channel.

Otherwise Dr. Adams does not have an entirely squeaky clean image backing him. He has multiple malpractice suits against him and a few DUIs under his belt. Nonetheless Adams is claiming that the tummy-tuck and breast lift that he performed on Adams was not the reason for her death. He claims that it was due to a heart attack ... or a pulmonary embolism ... or vomiting. Hm, maybe he should get his story straight.

No matter what I think what happened to Donda West is quite a shame. Imagine going in for cosmetic surgery and not making it. But she really should have listened to her original doctor and got herself checked out prior to having any work done.

Celebrity Divorces are Quite Pricy

When Juanita Jordan showed up in our top searches today I was really unsure as to why. Why would anyone be searching for Michael Jordan's ex-wife? It turns out that a list of Hollywood's most expensive divorces has been released. Topping off the list? The Juanita and Michael Jordan divorce.

I guess everyone wanted to see just how much Juanita was set to get after filing for divorce in 2006. It turns out that the couple signed a post-nup in 1999 that would ensure Juanita got half of her husband's earnings. That could be a pretty penny looking at Jordan's career. And according to reports the baller is now worth over $168 million. This does not even count the couple's Chicago estate!

Other break-ups to make the nastiest divorces list included Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards and Britney and K-fed. And of course we cannot forget about Heather Mills and Sir Paul McCartney. Things are getting quite catty as accusations and rumors fly prior to settlement. If I was going to get as much as Heather Mills is set to get out of this divorce, I may just keep my mouth shut ;)
