Benazir Bhutto Assassinated

Benazir BhuttoIt was only less than three months ago when Benazir Bhutto returned to Pakistan after eight years of exile in London and Dubai. The former Prime Minister of Pakistan was killed on Thursday while campaigning in Rawalpindi -- she was standing in the open sunroof of her bullet-proof car. According to an Interior Ministry spokesman, Bhutto had a fatal skull fracture for being hit by the lever of the sunroof, not by any of the bullets fired.

Bhutto was buried next to her father and brother in southern province of Sindh. Thousands of Pakistanis mourn the death of this leader during three days of national mourning, enacted by President Pervez Musharraf.

The Pakistani government suspects al-Qaeda's involvement in the killing. They claim that they have a taped conversation of a Taliban leader congratulating a friend for the assassination.

Tiger Attack on Christmas Day

Siberian tigerThe holidays are supposed to be a time for family and joy. The Sousa family in San Jose will remember this Christmas forever -- 17-year-old Carlos Sousa died from a tiger attack in San Francisco zoo on Christmas Day. The 300-pound Siberian tiger, named Tatiana, also attacked two young men before the police shot her. This is not the first time Tatiana has attacked humans -- in 2006, she mauled a zoo keeper's arm in front of a crowd.

San Franciscans are outraged by the attack, some even commented on the San Francisco Chronicle Web site that the zoo should be closed. Police and zoo officials don't know if Tatiana escaped because of human intervention or if she jumped over a 14-foot-high wall.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom called on zoo officials to make immediate changes. "The mayor expects immediate improvements in protocols and facilities so that tragedies such as this never happen again," said Newsom's spokesman Nathan Ballard. The zoo director said they will install surveillance cameras and a new metal barriers for the tigers and lions.

Who's Pregnant and Who's Dirty?

Jessica Alba and Cash WarrenHere's another celebrity you can add to the hot mom list: Jessica Alba. She and long-time boyfriend Cash Warren are expecting a baby in late spring, early summer. How pretty will that child be?

Before the official announcement to People magazine, the 26-year-old actress tells Ryan Seacrest on his radio show earlier this week, "Let's put it this way, I need a significant amount of time off."

Another Jessica also makes our list today -- Jessica Biel has been voted the cleanest female celebrity by users of SoCal Cleanse Detox. Jessica BielYes, really. David Beckham snags the cleanest male celebrity award while Jessica Alba is the fourth cleanest female celebrity.

For the dirty clan, Amy Winehouse and Tommy Lee top the list (in my opinion, it should have been Britney Spears for her walking barefoot in a public restroom). Paris Hilton is the runner up and Tara Reid takes the third spot for the dirtiest female celebrities.

Surprisingly, Matthew McConaughey is no. 4 in the cleanest list. I thought he would've been on the dirty list -- is it just me, or isn't it time for him to put a shirt on?

Winehouse and West Dominate Grammys

Amy WinehouseThe nominees for the Grammy Awards were announced yesterday. Kanye West snags eight nominations while Amy Winehouse snags six.

I wonder if Amy Winehouse gets the nominations because of the attention that she has been getting in the tabloids, but her 'Back to Black' album did sell 1.3 million copies in the U.S. Among the nominations that she receives are Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Best New Artist, Song Of The Year and Best Female Pop Performance. By the way, what is the difference between record of the year and album of the year? And why do we still call it 'record?' I myself have never seen a record player in my life!

Sorry to digress, back to the Grammy nominations ... I'm disappointed that one my favorite artists, Corinne Bailey Rae, only gets nominated for one category (Song Of The Year). And am I the only one who doesn't like the song 'Hey There Delilah?' It must be, since it's also nominated for Song Of The Year. I just think it sounds so depressing.

While we're waiting to see if Amy Winehouse will make it to the ceremony, check out the full list of Grammy nominees on Spinner.com.

Autism Tops Searches on Kid's Health Topics

I recently had a baby girl and wow, how my life changed! I found myself humming nursery rhymes during my commute and my magazine rack is now full of parenting magazines instead of fashion magazines. More importantly, I now pay much more attention to children's health topics. For example, I insisted on getting a thimersol-free flu shot because of the possible link to autism -- there is no evidence that thimersol causes autism, but I figured that it wouldn't hurt to be extra careful.

I wasn't too surprised that autism came out to be the number one searched children's health topics on AOL Search. Back in September, Jenny McCarthy and Holly Robinson Peete were on 'Oprah' to talk about it. Of course, anything on 'Oprah' gets a major boost in interest. Also, remember Jason McElwain, the autistic kid from Rochester who scored six three-pointers in the last four minutes of a high school basketball game last year?

It's great that autism is getting a lot of attention. Autism is more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined according to Autism Speaks. A CDC study on autism and developmental disabilities in 2007 found that one in 150 8-year-old children in multiple areas of the U.S. had an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Also, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, three to six children out of every 1,000 will have autism.

So whether or not your child has autism, learn about it so you can learn the signs and show your support to parents of autistic children. Search for autism on AOL Search or go to AOL Body for more information.

This month's top searched children's health topic on AOL Search:
1) Autism
2. Lyme disease
3) ADHD
4) Head lice
5) Strep throat
6) Chicken pox
7) Meningitis
8) Asthma

How Smart is Kellie Pickler?

I love the show 'Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?' Kellie Pickler was on the show last night, and it was exactly as I thought it would be: painfully funny.

Kellie PicklerThere were so many moments when I gasped and laughed, but let's just do several highlights here. First, when asked about Budapest, she blurted out that she thought Europe was a country. By the way, it seems that many people don't know about Budapest either since that's one of our Hot Searches today. When asked about how many 'E's' are in a word, she looked puzzled because doh! There are no 'E's' in the word 'word.' Sigh ...

The best part was when her strange logic on a question about US presidents landed the correct answer. She picked Franklin Pierce as the answer because her ears are pierced and her last name starts with a 'P.' She dropped out when asked about the number of canine teeth in a typical adult human mouth.

You can't get mad at her for not knowing a lot of the answers. She was entertaining and she won $50,000 for American Red Cross and AARP. Plus, she just seems really sweet. An awww moment happens when Jeff Foxworthy told her that she was smart at the end of the show.

Anyway, it was a fun show to watch and I'm sure Kellie Pickler learned a lot. FOX needs to bring her back to the show!

Martina Hingis -- Innocent or Not?

Martina HingisWhat is it with athletes these days and substance abuse? Athletes are role models who should follow healthy lifestyles -- isn't that one of the reasons for their success?

The latest athlete in the news about this is Martina Hingis. The five-time Grand Slam champion tested positive for cocaine, but she said that she has "never taken drugs" and that she's "one hundred percent innocent." She also claimed that her fruit drink may have been spiked.

On Thursday, November 1st, she announced her retirement from tennis for the second time. She stated that "I have no desire to spend the next several years of my life reduced to fighting against the doping officials."

Do I believe her? It's hard to since she's tested positive. Maybe her fruit drink was spiked as she claimed, but it's time for her to retire from tennis anyway to make room for some new stars!

What To Do in Las Vegas?

Las VegasYou've seen their commercials with the slogan "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas." Is that really true? I don't know because I've never been to Las Vegas. What's wrong with me? I always manage to avoid going there for some reason. Whenever I go on a vacation, I usually end up at a Caribbean beach.

I decided to put Las Vegas as one of the places I'd like to visit and started a list of things to do while I'm there. I love Cirque du Soleil, so going to see one of their shows is a must. Of course there are David Copperfield and Celine Dion shows. I'm not into Celine Dion's music, but as an avid 'So You Think You Can Dance' viewer, I'll put her show in my list of performances to go to so I can see Mia Michaels' choreographed dance. Of course, there are always shopping and the casinos.

While doing my research on traveling to Las Vegas, I pulled top searches for Las Vegas to see if there's anything I should add to my list of to-dos while I'm there. I think I'll skip No. 9, thank you. Is there anything else that should've made the list?

Why I Like Paying My Mortgage

MortgageThe first time I felt like an official grown-up was when I got my first mortgage. The entire process, from gathering information on my assets and signing pages and pages of documents, to stepping into my own house, was a big deal. Even though I had to reduce my shopping budget to pay for the mortgage, I was ecstatic. I could finally decorate the house however I wanted, and of course, get my own dog!

That was seven years ago and since then, I've done one refinance and signed another mortgage when I moved into my current house. That means I have paid over 80 months of mortgage, with close to 50 months for my current house and I still have at least 300 months of payments to go. That seems like a lifetime, but I really don't mind.

I really do enjoy paying my mortgage. It is a big chunk of my budget and a huge amount of debt, and every time I look at the monthly statements it's depressing to see how much is allocated to interest versus the actual mortgage. However, it dereases my tax bill (except last year, ouch!) and it makes me take care of my house more. Granite countertop? Done. New patio and a fence in the backyard for the dogs? Done.

So month after month, I happily send a check to my mortgage lender. When I'm ready to move or to refinance, I'll be happy to complete my paperwork and sign pages and pages of documents.

Anyway, if you are in the process of looking to refinance or to find a new mortgage company, check out the top mortgage searches on AOL for some more resources. For example, did you know there are so many mortgage calculators out there? Besides calculating the usual information, such as how much mortgage you can afford, you can also calculate how much you'll save in taxes, if you should pay points or not and more.

Wherever you are in the process with your mortgage, good luck and I hope you'll be as content as I am when you send a check to your lender.

Big Congrats to Jenna Bush!

Jenna BushEver since the Bush twins stepped into the White House, they have been scrutinized for everything, mostly for their partying habit while they were in college. From charges of underage drinking to attempting to use fake IDs, they were the opposite of Chelsea Clinton, who kept a very low profile while her father was in the White House.

It's not until the 2004 Presidential Election that Barbara and Jenna Bush started coming to light in a positive way. Their remarks to the Republican National Convention were light-hearted and well received. They followed their father on his campaign trail and they even gave an interview and did a photo shoot for Vogue magazine. Nice!

I guess all girls grow up to be women. Just recently, Jenna Bush announced her engagement to her long time boyfriend, Henry Hager. His father is John Hager, the chairman of the Virginia Republican Party. He worked as a White House aide and he is currently attending University of Virginia as a graduate student.

It's already rumored that Jenna is pregnant, but the White House insists that pregnancy is not the reason for her engagement. Also, some people predict that her wedding will be like the Diana/Charles wedding, hopefully minus the puffy sleeved wedding dress. Whatever the reason for the engagement and whichever wedding style Jenna chooses to have, big congrats to her and Henry!

On My Way to an Early Retirement

Saving for retirementI've been obsessed with savings since I was little. I don't remember how old I was when I got my first piggy bank, but I remember that I always tried to save every bit I could. I still remember the time when my parents doubled my allowance after finding out how much money I'd saved. If only that were still the case today!

Now that I'm older, I'm obsessed about saving for my retirement. I don't get tired of hearing my financial advisor drilling me about putting more in my 401(k).. I scrutinize my monthly statements to see how much I've gained or lost in my IRAs. The only things that I don't play with are stocks. I just don't want to stress over every single one. I know it's all for the long term, but how could you not think about it all the time when the ticker is right in front of your eyes? I much prefer mutual funds so I don't put all of my eggs in one basket.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm too serious about savings for retirement, considering that I have another 35 to 40 years to retirement. I have to remind myself that it's never too early to save for retirement. A recent article in Money Magazine shows a comparison of retirement planning at different ages. They calculate how much money you'll have at age 65 if you contribute 10 percent in your 401(k) starting at 30, 35 and 45, with a starting salary of $40,000 and a 4 percent annual raise. They estimate that the 30-year-old will have $1 million while the 45-year-old will have $461,000. There, that makes me feel better!

One of these days, I'll fill out the paperwork to increase my 401(k) contribution so maybe I can retire earlier than I've planned. Any advice on saving for an early retirement?

Obama Girl Not So Popular

Obama girlOnline video has definitely played a major role in our lives, whether it's for personal entertainment, or if you happen to be famous, for publicity. Remember the 'I Got a Crush on Obama' video?

Several months ago, Amber Lee Ettinger became a household name among Internet surfers as the Obama girl. In the video, she struts around in tight outfits while lip-synching a song about her love of Sen. Barack Obama. The video attracted millions of viewers and received attention from major U.S. news media. Obama's campaign denies any involvement in the video production.

When I saw the video, I thought it was funny and no harm was done. It's all for fun ... who cares if the Ettinger really supports Obama or not? It's all an act! However, in the Obama household, this video is not taken so well. The Senator's 6-year-old daughter has been asking about it , including saying 'Daddy already has a wife' to his wife. No response from Sen. Obama on how his wife reacts to their daughter's questions, but I wouldn't want to be in her shoes. He wishes that "people would think about what impact their actions have on kids and families."

Judge for yourself. To see the video, go to AOL Search and search for Obama girl -- click on the Video tab above the search box.

Is Michael Vick's Career Over?

Michael VickI just tried logging on to Michael Vick's official Web site to see if he's made an official statement about his latest plea deal. Instead, I got a nice error message that 'the server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit.' I guess I'm not the only one interested in checking out the latest on the Falcon QB!

With his plea deal, Vick can be sentenced for up to five years in prison and fined $250,000. However, AP reported that prosecutors will recommend 12 to 18 months of prison time, according to an anonymous government official.

Animal right advocates hope that Vick's case increases awareness about animal cruelty. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals spokesperson mentioned that they're getting leads on other cases. They are also offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in dogfighting. The American Kennel Club is concerned that Vick's punishment is inadequate, while the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals praises the U.S. Attorney's office and the USDA for sending a clear message to those engaged in animal cruelty.

As a Virginia Tech alumna, I'm upset about this whole case. I can only name a handful of Virginia Tech football players who have made it big in the NFL, and Vick is one of them. It's embarrassing and disappointing that a superstar has done such terrible things. He has brought shame on himself, his family, his fellow alumni and his fellow athletes. I hope that he NFL doesn't let him play in the league anymore.

While the NFL continues its own investigation, many people wonder if Vick will play in the league again. I personally think that his career is over. Even if he continues playing in the NFL, what company would want to endorse him? It's just a PR nightmare. What do you think?

Risking Life on Ice

'Ice Road Truckers'With the recent Utah mine tragedy, it's hard to imagine taking such a risky job. I recently read an article on CNNMoney.com about America's most dangerous jobs. I thought firefighters or miners would have been first on the list. However, fishermen are ranked first with 147 deaths per 100,000 workers, followed by pilots with 87 deaths per 100,000 workers in 2006. The stats are from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Some people are braver than others -- if not, there won't be any firefighters. Then there are those who take dangerous jobs for the money, like the truck drivers on 'Ice Road Truckers' on The History Channel.

These truck drivers deliver equipment to diamond mines in Northern Canada, risking their lives by driving over frozen lakes. They drive 100,000 pounds of truck on just inches of ice. With double digit negative temperature, it's not uncommon for the trucks to freeze and break down. Did I mention the frostbite danger? This job is definitely not for the faint of heart.

The show started in June with the season finale was on August 19. In that a short period of time, the show became the most watched program on The History Channel, averaging 3.9 million total viewers according to Nielsen. Because of its success, the show will have three additional episodes: a one-hour historical show and a two-part reunion show of the truckers since the season ended last winter.

I haven't watched all of the episodes, I've just been watching video clips here and there on the Web. So far, it looks interesting ... I'll definitely add it to my list of shows to TiVo when the new episodes air!
