Top Searched Children's Health Topics

Sick childI have two rambunctious nephews and an adorable niece. It's so sad when they're not feeling well, they just seem so helpless! Thankfully, they're pretty healthy kids. I think one of my nephews has asthma, but that's about it.

With me, I was a lucky child. Besides the occasional common cold and stomach virus, and a minor case of chicken pox, I was pretty healthy. Maybe it was luck, or maybe it was the amount of fruit and vegetables that I ate as a child. My parents were pretty persistent with having greens on my plates everyday! As I got older, I got smarter (or more spoiled?) and debated for higher allowance in exchange for eating more vegetables.

Other kids are not so lucky -- check out these statistics from CDC:
- Reported cases of Lyme disease have doubled since 1991. Among children, it's most common between 5 and 14-year-old kids.
- Autism affects 1 in 150 children in the U.S.
- 4.4 million youth are diagnosed with ADHD by a healthcare professional.
- Meningitis affects 1,400 to 2,800 Americans every year. Between 10 percent and 14 percent of those affected will die from it. CDC recently recommended that all children between the ages of 11 and 18 get vaccinated against bacterial meningitis.

When I have children, I hope that they're healthy physically and mentally. Of course, I'll love them no matter what. For now, I'll read up on the various health concerns that affect kids. Hopefully I'll be prepared if they're diagnosed with any of the serious conditions.

How about you? What was your health condition as a child? Perhaps your child is experiencing some of these health conditions?

AOL's top searched children's health topics from this month:
1. Lyme disease
2. Autism
3. Head lice
4. Meningitis
5. Strep throat
6. Chicken pox

Searching for All Things 'Harry Potter'

Harry Potter and the Deathly HallowsJuly is a big month for Potterheads. The movie 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' was released on July 11th and the final book, 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,' will be released on July 21st.

I don't consider myself a true Potterhead. I've read every book and seen every movie, but I don't stand in line at a movie theater or at a bookstore at midnight on the release day ... with costumes! Anyway, there's nothing wrong with that, I just prefer to pre-order my book online and see the movie the weekend after it comes out.

Just for fun, I checked out what people search for anything related to 'Harry Potter' on AOL Search. It's no surprise that many people search for general terms, movie titles and book titles, such as 'Harry Potter,' 'Harry Potter' books, 'Harry Potter' movies, 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' and 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.' So I took these 5 terms out of the list and now we're left with these top 10:

This month's top searched Harry Potter terms on AOL, excluding books & movies:
1. 'Harry Potter' merchandise
2. 'Harry Potter' costumes
3. 'Harry Potter' spoilers
4. 'Harry Potter' games
5. 'Harry Potter' cast
6. 'Harry Potter' wands
7. 'Harry Potter' quiz
8. 'Harry Potter' theme park
9. 'Harry Potter' characters
10. 'Harry Potter' posters

Harry Potter and the Order of the PhoenixI can't believe that people actually search for 'Harry Potter' wands (yep, it's number 6). Other interesting things that people search for but didn't make the top 10 list include 'Harry Potter' spells and 'Harry Potter' recipes. Some people get into the stories so much that they forget Harry Potter is a character and the books are fiction. Seriously, are you really trying to practice Occlumency in case your ex pulls a Legilimency on you?

Well, whatever you believe, I can't deny that 'Harry Potter' is fun to read and to watch. It's also been fun seeing the actors and actresses grow up on the big screen. I'm sad that the final installation of the series is almost here, so I guess I'll be back to reading books intended for adults after July 21st!

Can't have enough of 'Harry Potter?' Check out these links to find what you're looking for: movie information on Moviefone, products on AOL Shopping, 'Harry Potter' Hub on KOL (AOL for Kids) and for all things 'Harry Potter,' you can always search for 'Harry Potter' on AOL Search.

Shh ... Health Concerns You Don't Talk About

I recently pulled rankings for top searched health concerns and wow, was I surprised to see what people searched for!

Health concerns are certainly no laughing matter. However, I thought it'd be interesting to show the top searched health topics that people generally don't talk about. Check it out for yourself and you'll see what I mean.

If you happen to have any of the health concerns listed below, you probably talk to your close friends and your doctor (I really hope you do talk to your doctor!) about them. However, it's extremely rare that they make it in your casual conversations. Can you imagine strolling into the office one morning and when your cube neighbor asks a polite "How are you?" you respond with, "Fine, thanks. Except for the [fill in your health concern here] that I just got diagnosed with!" Can we say awkward?

Anyway, if you're diagnosed with any of the health concerns below, or if you're just curious to see what they're all about, the Internet is a great thing. Hello, privacy! Go to AOL Body or search for these topics on AOL Search, such as depression symptoms, STD testing and hair restoration.

AOL's top searched health concerns that you don't talk about from this week:
1. Depression
2. HPV
3. Yeast infection
4. Genital warts
5. Genital herpes
6. Urinary tract infection
7. AIDS
8. Constipation
9. Erectile dysfunction
10. Hair loss

Movies to Watch This Summer

MoviesAre you a big 'Transformers' fan? If so, you probably already went to see it this past weekend. That's definitely one of the movies that's in my list to go see this summer. That and 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.'

I'm cheap when it comes to movies. On average, I spend about $30 for myself when I go see a movie, between the tickets, the fee for ordering the ticket online, popcorn and soda. I miss the days where I paid only $0.50 (yes, 50 cents, I didn't misplace any decimals) at a theater in my old college town.

Anyway, what movies are in your must see list this summer?

This week's top searched movies on AOL Search:
1. 'Transformers'
2. 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix'
3. 'Ratatouille'
4. 'Sicko'
5. 'Hairspray'
6. 'Live Free or Die Hard'
7. 'Evening'
8. 'Pirates of the Caribbean'
9. '1408'
10. 'License to Wed'

The Cutest Cars

Mini CooperI'm a sucker for small cars. Not only can you zip in and out of lanes with them, you can also easily parallel park in tight spots. Or, if some jerk parks too close to you (that's been happening a lot to me lately), no worries there. Did I mention how much gas you'll save?

For the best small car out there, my vote goes to Mini Cooper. Ever since I watched 'The Italian Job,' Mini Cooper is on my list to get if I ever have a three-car garage. I bet a lot of people got Mini Coopers after they saw that movie. Why wouldn't they? They're fast (OK, if you have Mini Cooper S), they have nice interior and exterior features, they have plenty of customized accessories and they're just so cute!

Apparently my sentiment toward the Mini is echoed by many people. It tops our list as the most searched small car on AOL Search. Looking at the list below, I wish that Volkswagen Rabbit was in the top 10. I think that's the second cutest car out there ... maybe it's the rabbit logo on the back of the car that got me. What is with me today? I'm just super sentimental.

Back to Mini Cooper, I've been searching online for a rumored Mini Cooper with four doors, and the latest I've heard is it may come to the U.S. in 2008. Do you know if that's true?

Which would you vote for the best small car out there?

Last month's top searched small cars on AOL Search:
1. Mini Cooper
2. Ford Focus
3. Honda Fit
4. Toyota Yaris
5. Nissan Versa
6. Toyota Matrix

What's Your Dream Car?

FerrariIf you had all the money in the world, what would you buy? I think I'll buy an island. One of my friends mentioned high-end performance or exotic cars. That would be fun, too!

Washington, D.C., is definitely no L.A., but I've seen several exotic cars on the Beltway, like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley and Maserati. Actually, I've seen more Ferrari and Maserati than the other cars -- probably because there's a Ferrari and Maserati dealership several minutes away from work. Ahem, where's our free corporate car?

Anyway, check out the top searched performance cars below just for fun. If you've never seen one on the road, make sure to do a search and check out their pictures.

Fun Summer Camps

What are your kids doing now that schools are out? Too bad you can't take the entire summer off for a vacation! My commute to work has been better lately since not many school buses are out on the road. However, I see quite a few fun-looking summer camp buses now. Well, it must be that time of the year when kids are shipped off to camps!

When I was little, my parents were never too big on summer camp. When I was in school, I spent most of my summer time traveling and visiting families. I think the first and the only camp I've ever been to was a cheerleading camp. It was fun hanging out with my friends and meeting other people from different schools, but I could only take about a week of more than a hundred girls running around doing cheerleading moves!

Looking at the list of camps that people search for, I wish I had gone to a space camp. How fun would it be to get all dressed up in an astronaut suit and be in a space simulator?

So what camp is your kid going to this summer? Or was there a favorite summer camp that you went to as a child?

Splurge for Your Own Good

Which things do you consider luxurious? In my opinion, that's completely subjective. As you increase your standard of living, you just want more and more. What you used to see as a luxury item may now be a necessity. Don't you think that's true?

Seriously. If you always go to luxury resorts for vacations, then do you really want to scale back and hang out at a local motel? Or, if you always sleep on 500 thread count, Egyptian cotton bedding, would you go back and sleep on 100-thread-count bedding?

My splurges on luxury items are always on big ticket items or things that make me feel all pampered. Vacations, electronics and a day at the spa are among my splurges.

What do you splurge on?

It's Baby Season!

Something must be in the water ... haven't you seen more pregnant women everywhere?

Tiger Woods and his wife Elin Nordegren are now proud parents to a baby girl named Sam Alexis. She was born less than 24 hours after Woods finished second at the US Open on Father's Day. They released photos of Sam Alexis on their website on Monday -- yes, it's free. If you haven't checked out their pictures, don't miss the cutest one. It's a family photo complete with their two dogs ... so adorable!

Nancy Grace, a CNN anchor, announced that she was secretly married in April and that she's pregnant with twins. Now that she's three months pregnant, she's not keeping it a secret anymore.

Vroom, Vroom!

Sports carNow that it's sunny and above 80 degrees, I see more convertible cars and cute little sports cars out on the road. I had a convertible once, for only about a year and a half. I decided to trade it in since it was fun to drive for only about three months out of the year. If I lived in Southern California, then it'd be a different story.

Anyway, I've gotten over parting with my Audi TT and now I am enjoying my gas-loving Prius. However, I can't help but check out pictures of Audi R8 on the Internet once in a while. Although if I ever get a convertible again, I will go with a hard top convertible, like a Lexus SC.

I might have drooled a little bit when I checked out top searched sports cars on AOL Search. I was a little surprised that some cars didn't make it to the top 10, like Lexus SC and Audi R8. But hey, Americans love their Mustang!

Check out the list of top searched sports cars below. Do you see other sports cars that should have been included?

Can't Get Enough of Gadgets!

iPhoneAs it gets closer to June 29, I think more and more about getting an iPhone. Do I want it? Yes. Do I need it? No. So the responsible side of my brain convinced me not to get it and stick with my Sidekick 3, which I still love! Although I've been thinking about BlackBerry Pearl lately. Well, that's another story.

Anyway, I'm pretty good with holding back on impulse buying for electronics and gadgets. I waited several weeks before I waited in line in a 15 degree weather for a Nintendo Wii. My local electronics store only had 15 Wii sets to give away and I was number 14 ... was I lucky or what? But once in a while, I get the urge to either get a brand new gadget just for fun. I was cleaning up my home office the other day and I found at least three Palm Pilots and four iPods from the past few years. Hey, that was then. On my wish list right now is a camcorder.

How about you? What's on your wish list for electronics and gadgets? Do you think the iPhone is really worth buying?

Top Searched Resorts

If I could, I'd go on a vacation every day. I'm high maintenance when it comes to vacations, so I generally skip activities that require sleeping and cooking my meals outside, like camping. The only vacation I've had that's considered roughing it was at a jungle lodge. OK, I really wasn't roughing it because honestly, it was a luxury resort that's located in a rain forest. It also has private lodges as guest rooms, complete with a spa and an award-winning restaurant at the property. So what? Isn't the whole point of a vacation to get pampered?

Because I am spoiled when it comes to vacations, I usually check out resorts in various countries. My favorite resorts are located by the beach, but still somewhat close to the mountains. Maybe that's why I like Puerto Rico , Bali and Belize so much.

One of the few resorts that I generally try to stay away from is all-inclusive resorts. It's nice when I just want to sit by the beach with unlimited food and drinks. But it's just too tempting! Plus, I prefer a more active vacation where I can go hiking, check out historic sites and shop for local crafts. When I go to an all inclusive resort, I feel obligated to just stay at the resort to get my money's worth. So far in my life, I've only been to three all inclusive resorts and each time, I came home with a few more pounds on my hips.

Anyway, it seems like I'm a minority when it comes to all-inclusive resorts. It's definitely very popular among vacation goers. It tops our list of top searched resorts and I just can't seem to get away from seeing their ads everywhere.

So what kind of resorts do you like? I'd love to get ideas for my next vacation ... any specific countries or resorts you'd recommend?

Politicians Online

I'm not sure if online video is more of a blessing or a disaster to politicians. Remember George Allen and his "macaca" comment? Nowadays, all you need is a cell phone with video recording capability and post it on the Web to expose a politician.

It seems like lately, presidential candidates are treating online video as a blessing. Barack Obama has the Obama girl singing in short shorts about her crush on the candidate. The video has been viewed by over 1.5 million people. Hillary Clinton's latest video spoof on 'The Sopranos' finale also attracted millions. Will these videos help them with election? I guess we'll see!

SUVs That Don't Like Mud

I don't know how SUVs got so popular. Was it caused by parents who didn't want to drive minivans? Or, was it caused by people who needed to haul a lot of stuff around, like three kids, two dogs and five bicycles to their vacation destination? Whatever the reason is, I can tell you that SUVs are not popular because drivers want to go off-roading.

I don't blame the luxury SUV owners for not wanting to go off-roading. If I had a $100,000 SUV with shiny chrome spinners, the last thing I want to do is get it dirty. And the GPS is not needed to navigate through the mountains. The heated leather seats? They'll keep the driver and passengers comfortable during a 10-minute ride from their house to the local coffee shop in a cold winter weather.

Comfort, convenience or status, whatever reason people buy luxury SUVs for, good for them. Let them enjoy the ride! Who cares if their SUVs have never touched sands or mud?

If you could pick any luxury SUVs to drive, which one would be on your wish list? Check out the list below for some ideas.

How Safe Is Your Baby?

I was in a baby store the other day and I was amazed at all of the things they have in there. From baby toys to baby gates, they have everything you can imagine to make sure your baby is safe and secure.

My neighbor has a 2-year-old daughter and their house is 100 percent childproof. There's a gate at each stairway and the railings are covered with plastic so the toddler can't slip in between. Also, each corner of their tables is covered with some kind of protection so if she falls and hits the corner she won't crack her head open. Wow! I don't remember having all that stuff when I was growing up. And what's with the new toys? I was happy playing with LEGO and baby dolls when I was little, but I guess that's no longer fancy enough.

Anyway, I'm sure all mothers and fathers want the best for their children. So I commend the parents who do everything they can to protect their babies. When it comes time for me to have a baby, I'm sure I'll do the same. I'll cover every single electrical outlet, put up gates at every stairway and strap the baby with a seat belt while he or she uses a high chair.

Check out what people search for when looking for baby supplies below. Can you think of anything else that should have made it in the top 10?
